{"id":57981,"date":"2017-06-19T12:38:12","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T17:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=57981"},"modified":"2017-06-25T05:16:54","modified_gmt":"2017-06-25T10:16:54","slug":"visiting-holocaust-survivors-led-new-yorks-beautiful-orthodox-synagogues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/inspiration\/visiting-holocaust-survivors-led-new-yorks-beautiful-orthodox-synagogues\/","title":{"rendered":"How Visiting Holocaust Survivors Led Me to New York&#8217;s Most Beautiful Orthodox Synagogues"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>I was down and out, the day after Yom Kippur in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>A financial advisor for over 20 years, not fully recovered from the financial crises of a few years prior, I was looking to &#8220;give back&#8221; somehow, to make a difference, not knowing what to do but pray to Hashem, in my own words, &#8220;Ribono shel olam, help me help others.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So I signed on as a Volunteer with\u00a0<a id=\"m_-6447583706190775954LPlnk470135\" href=\"http:\/\/www.connect2ny.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.connect2ny.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1497977832579000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFFpOwkobtOnOCZtQLccBmZIae5_w\">www.connect2ny.org<\/a>, paying friendly visits\u00a0to lonely\u00a0<span id=\"m_-64475837061907759540.3081816547684708\" class=\"m_-6447583706190775954highlight\">Holocaust<\/span>\u00a0Survivors, a project of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island (JCCGCI). Previously, my experience with Coney Island was limited to rides on the Cyclone and trips to the aquarium.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Previously, I had\u00a0purchased books and DVDs about the\u00a0<span id=\"m_-64475837061907759540.4277195233788589\" class=\"m_-6447583706190775954highlight\">Holocaust<\/span>, but this time it was different. Over the next two years, I would drive many <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1631454269\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Thursday<\/span><\/span> evenings and <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1631454270\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Sunday\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mornings from my home on Long Island, to visit more than twenty survivors. I heard some amazing stories from those who wished to talk about it. There were several who didn&#8217;t and I respected their wishes. From survivors such as Rebecca in Borough Park, who was a refugee on the ship Exodus 1947, where the British did not allow the passengers to get off in Israel. Stories from Ludwig, a survivor in Midwood, whose Father got the family out of Nazi Germany before Kristallnacht, and how the Captain of the Queen Mary held the ship and saved them as they were crossing borders, trying to escape. Stories about Frances, from Flatbush, a Survivor of several camps and the &#8220;death march,&#8221; \u00a0who was at Auschwitz, and assisted four women, including Roza Robota, blow up an oven (the women were caught and hanged).<\/div>\n<p dir=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-post-57981 wp-image-57983 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/unnamed-2-7-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/unnamed-2-7-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/unnamed-2-7.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-post-57981 wp-image-57982 alignleft\" &#8220;Emunah,&#8221; faith in Hashem, and about good people striving to rebuild after the horrors of the Shoah.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">I learned about some of the children, grandchildren, even great grandchildren of some of the survivors.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">And I learned of the loved ones lost and those that never really rebuilt broken lives and live near poverty even to this day.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Along the way, I visited Orthodox synagogues in neighborhoods from Brighton Beach to Borough Park, from Coney Island to Crown Heights and Williamsburg, and\u00a0quickly, my exploration expanded to Queens and Manhattan.\u00a0I especially\u00a0enjoyed being in the different neighborhoods and seeing the relatively new influx of immigrants in Brooklyn and Queens from places like Iran, Iraq, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Here are ten of the stunning\u00a0sanctuaries I visited:<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft
