{"id":56219,"date":"2017-03-16T07:23:43","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T12:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=56219"},"modified":"2017-03-29T08:19:43","modified_gmt":"2017-03-29T13:19:43","slug":"%e2%80%8bsnapshot%e2%80%8b-southfield-mi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/inspiration\/%e2%80%8bsnapshot%e2%80%8b-southfield-mi\/","title":{"rendered":"OU Jewish Communities Fair Snapshot:\u200b Southfield, MI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Ariella Shaffren moved to Southfield, MI, from Teaneck, NJ, in 2012, one of the first things she noticed was the more relaxed pace of life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/fair\/\"><span data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;Find out more about Norfolk at the OU Jewish Communities Fair on April 30&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:14849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:3355443},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Georgia, \\&quot;Times New Roman\\&quot;, \\&quot;Bitstream Charter\\&quot;, Times, serif&quot;,&quot;16&quot;:12}\">Find out more about Southfield at the OU Jewish Communities Fair on April 30<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one honks their cars, no one is rushing anywhere, and commutes to work match the actual times listed on Google maps!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from less harried driving, Ariella said she chose to move to Southfield, a northern suburb of Detroit, for its communal warmth. \u201cEven before our move, community members connected with us and treated us as if they knew us forever,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Yechiel Morris, who has led the Young Israel of Southfield since 2002, noted that Southfield, owing to its well-established Jewish community, has hospitability down to a science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to move here and get lost in the shuffle,\u201d he explained. \u201cOur community has been reaching out to young families for over a decade, and we do it well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an assertion bolstered by numbers\u2014Southfield has welcomed 40 families in recent years, most of whom are attracted to the option of being in a warm and friendly Jewish community that has numerous Jewish resources already in place.<\/p>\n<p>There is a number of Modern Orthodox schools and yeshivot catering to various observance levels and offering tuition under $10,000; an expansive eruv; two mikvaot; and kosher restaurants and bakeries. There is a host of chesed organizations and an active Jewish Federation that offers\u00a0programs for people from all walks of Jewish life. Additional schools and kollelim are nearby the greater Detroit area.<\/p>\n<p>As for Southfield itself, the city offers a cosmopolitan feel thanks to its diverse range of residents and excellent city services, as well as affordability\u2014most 3-4 bedroom homes are under $200,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest adjustment, for us, was living without family nearby, but we have made friends here who have really been helpful,\u201d said Ariella. \u201cJust recently there were huge winds, and many people were without power. Southfield\u2019s Jewish community has a Facebook group, and people were constantly posting offering meals, hospitality, and anything to help those without power.
