{"id":54122,"date":"2016-08-17T04:44:18","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T09:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=54122"},"modified":"2016-08-17T04:44:18","modified_gmt":"2016-08-17T09:44:18","slug":"russian-jewish-publishing-house-moving-forward-russian-translation-talmud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/inspiration\/russian-jewish-publishing-house-moving-forward-russian-translation-talmud\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian Jewish Publishing House Moving Forward With Russian Translation of Talmud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia\u2019s Knizhniki Publishing House is moving forward with its ambitious plan to translate the Talmud (Oral Torah) \u2014 the ancient foundation of Jewish religious observance \u2014 into Russian.<\/p>\n<p>Comprising 63 tractates and 5,422 pages and translating one of Judaism\u2019s most sacred and fundamental texts is no easy feat, especially given the Talmud\u2019s complex structure, dense expositions of Jewish law, philosophy and lore, as well as its use of both Hebrew and Aramaic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started with this current project three years ago, working out how we envisioned the layout and how we wanted to do it,\u201d Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi and Knizhniki chief editor Boruch Gorin was quoted as saying by Chabad.org.<\/p>\n<p>Gorin added that the publishing house hopes to release around four volumes a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf all goes well, the entire Talmud will be published in Russian within 10 to 12 years,\u201d Gorin said.<\/p>\n<p>The printing of the Talmud, and all Jewish religious texts, was banned under the Bolsheviks. The repression of Jewish texts lasted until the 1980s, when the last Chumash (Five Books of Moses) printed was in 1918.
