{"id":53826,"date":"2016-05-18T14:29:07","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T19:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=53826"},"modified":"2016-05-18T14:35:11","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T19:35:11","slug":"five-diamonds-day-parenting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/parenting\/five-diamonds-day-parenting\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Diamonds a Day For Parenting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I attended a <em>mussar shiur<\/em> which\u00a0included Rav Avigdor Miller\u2019s concept of \u201cFive Diamonds Per Day;\u201d five actions we should do every day that will help us be better people, better Jews and improve the quality of our lives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53831 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/diamondsart.jpg\" alt=\"diamondsart\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/>Rav Miller\u2019s list includes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Speak to Hashem for one minute a day: You can tell Hashem about your problems, thank him for your successes, anything you want.<\/li>\n<li>Appreciate one thing a day: Today I appreciate_____________.<\/li>\n<li>Do something for the sake of Hashem: When you eat, think I am eating so that I can be healthy and I can serve Hashem. I am going to sleep, so that I can be well rested and serve Hashem. I am being kind and doing <em>chesed<\/em> because this is what Hashem wants.<\/li>\n<li>Give a <em>bracha <\/em>to another Jew: You can do this silently. If you pass by a family you can <em>daven<\/em> for them that they should be healthy etc.<\/li>\n<li>Tell people how great Hashem is: You can say, I was so tired today, but Hashem gave me <em>koach<\/em> to do what I needed to do.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We can apply these actions to our parenting:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Speak to Hashem for one minute a day: Talk to Hashem about the problems you are having with your children. Ask him to help you figure it out. We cannot parent without Hashem\u2019s help anyway.<\/li>\n<li>Appreciate one thing a day: Look at each of your children and think of one positive quality, something that you love about them.<\/li>\n<li>Do something for the sake of Hashem: Everything that we do to take care of our children is part of the <em>mitzvah <\/em>of <em>gidul banim<\/em>. We can say, \u201cI am changing diapers, feeding my children, taking them to school to fulfill this <em>mitzvah<\/em>, to serve Hashem.\u201d It elevates parenting to a whole new spiritual level.<\/li>\n<li>Give a <em>bracha<\/em> to another Jew: Give <em>brachot<\/em> to your children. Many of us give <em>brachot <\/em>to our children on Friday night. We can give them <em>brachot <\/em>everyday, we don&#8217;t even need to say it out loud. When they leave the house in the morning, we can think, \u201cHashem, please keep them safe, help them learn, help them get a long with their friends, etc.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Tell your children how great Hashem is: I have one friend, who, on Shabbat, asks her children to tell a <em>hashgacha pratit<\/em> story at their Shabbat table. They must share something that happened to them where they saw Hashem\u2019s hand\u2014such as they saw an old friend by chance, they needed a <em>dvar Torah<\/em> and they found it in the first sefer they looked, etc.\u00a0We can do an abbreviated version of this at our dinner table or we can just say in front of our kids, \u201cHashem was so good to me today.
