{"id":53602,"date":"2016-04-05T10:10:14","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T15:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=53602"},"modified":"2016-04-05T11:40:42","modified_gmt":"2016-04-05T16:40:42","slug":"practicing-what-you-teach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/parenting\/practicing-what-you-teach\/","title":{"rendered":"Practicing What You Preach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My husband was thoroughly amused when he heard that I wrote last week\u2019s article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/education\/keeping-your-cool-while-cleaning-for-pesach\/\">Keeping Your Cool When Cleaning For Pesach<\/a>. \u201c<em>You <\/em>wrote an article about keeping calm before Pesach!\u201d he laughed. I explained to him that although I am stressed before Pesach, I could be so, so much worse.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is, it\u2019s hard to keep your cool before Pesach. It is not easy. I write about it because I need all the help I can get.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53606 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/Cleaningart.jpg\" alt=\"Cleaningart\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/>I am not a naturally calm person, and it is a real effort for me to remain calm when I enlist my family\u2019s help to clean our house.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot stand a messy house. I need everything in its place.<\/p>\n<p>I like my kitchen counters to be cleared of junk. I don\u2019t like laundry piling up in the laundry room. And when I say it is spring\/Pesach cleaning I want everyone to hop to it.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I know, I have a tendency toward the tyrannical. Like a monarch from the Middle Ages. I have not sent anyone to the dungeon, I would like too.<\/p>\n<p>These articles that I write are ways to remind myself to use the communication skills that I teach.<\/p>\n<p>I have to remind myself that instead of saying:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat are you doing? I just cleaned the table! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou are eating <em>again<\/em>? Without a plate or a napkin?!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYour bathroom is not cleaned yet. You told me you were going to clean it!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can be non-accusatory:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe table needs to be cleared.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI need to know a time when your stuff that you don\u2019t need will be cleared out of your bathroom.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tonight my goal is to express to my family something like this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuys, I appreciate all your help up until now. For the most part, your rooms are clean and we are well on our way to a fully cleaned and organized home for Passover. I am going to try not to drive you all crazy but I can\u2019t promise that I will always ask nicely for your help. Try to be understanding and cooperate as best as you can.
