{"id":53474,"date":"2016-03-17T11:20:28","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T16:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=53474"},"modified":"2016-03-17T11:20:28","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T16:20:28","slug":"5-years-civil-war-syrian-refugee-thanks-israelis-jews-true-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/inspiration\/5-years-civil-war-syrian-refugee-thanks-israelis-jews-true-friends\/","title":{"rendered":"After 5 Years of Civil War, Syrian Refugee Thanks Israelis and Jews For Being \u201cTrue Friends\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the Tower.org:<\/p>\n<p>Syrian refugee Aboud Dandachi wrote an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/jewish-news-and-politics\/198488\/stateless-refugee-thank-you\" target=\"_blank\">essay<\/a> Monday in Tablet in which he expressed gratitude to his \u201ctrue friends,\u201d\u00a0including Jewish and Israeli people and organization who have assisted him and other refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Dandachi, a former high-tech worker who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetower.org\/2990-syrian-refugees-website-thanks-israel-for-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\">created a website<\/a>\u00a0called Thank You Am Israel, wrote appreciatively that it \u201cis\u00a0astonishing, absolutely astonishing, that there have been so many instances of Jewish and Israeli organizations and individuals who have gone out of their way to assist and help Syrians in need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A native\u00a0of Homs, which he described as being \u201cthe most livable city in all of the Levant,\u201d Dandachi just wanted to ignore the protests and establish himself professionally when they first started in 2011.\u00a0That changed on April 17, when protests at a funeral broke out.
