These days, it\u2019s just too much of a challenge to get all of their children in and out of the car and around in public.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 10 years, all four of Esther and Arthur Herzfeld\u2019s children have been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a degenerative muscle disease that has left one confined to a wheelchair full-time, two requiring a scooter or wheelchair whenever they\u2019re not home, and one walking slowly and carefully.<\/p>\n<p>The family from Teaneck, New Jersey, faces myriad of challenges, but they\u2019re trying to make life just a little bit easier by winning a handicapped-accessible van in an online contest run for National Mobility Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese vehicles cost $70,000-$80,000, they\u2019re astronomical,\u201d Esther told The Jerusalem Post from her home on Thursday evening. \u201cThere\u2019s no way that we can afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contest is being run throughout the month of May, and anyone can vote up to once a day from the NMEDA\u2019s \u201cLocal Heroes\u201d site.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full story at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Diaspora\/NJ-Jewish-familys-struggle-for-mobility-goes-viral-402581\">The Jerusalem Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobilityawarenessmonth.com\/entrant\/esther-herzfeld-teaneck-nj\/\">Register and vote daily to help the Herzfeld family<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Herzfeld family hasn\u2019t gone anywhere together for a year and a half.
