Passover is right around the corner and in Jewish homes across the world things are very busy. There is a lot of preparation, of the cleaning and the cooking variety that needs to be done. That means that Jewish parents around the world need lots of help. They turn to their kids and that is often where the trouble begins.<\/p>\n
I hear a lot of the following from parents:<\/p>\n
\u201cMy child does not listen to me\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy kids are so lazy, so irresponsible!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are so thoughtless, they don\u2019t even care how hard I am working.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, what can we do to help our children to really listen this holiday season?<\/p>\n
We need to remember that children do not respond well to direct commands, \u201cTake out the garbage now!\u201d or criticism, \u201cYou are so lazy and irresponsible!\u201d, sarcasm, \u201cYour room is just stunning for a slob!\u201d or accusations, \u201cWhy can\u2019t you just listen and do what I ask you to do?\u201d<\/p>\n
Kids want to be respected. Deep down they want to help out. However, they too have their pride and have a need to maintain their dignity. We need to approach them kindly:<\/p>\n
Here are 2 of my favorite techniques from the book,\u00a0\u201cHow To Talk So Kids Will Listen\u201d, that really work:<\/p>\n
Give choices and Give information:<\/p>\n
Instead of:\u00a0\u201cYou need to peel the vegetables now!\u201d
\nGive information:\u00a0\u201cThe carrots and potatoes are on the counter. The peeler is there too. \u201d
\nGive choices:\u00a0\u201cYou can peel the vegetables over the sink or spread newspaper out on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead of:\u00a0\u201cYou better clean your room now!\u201d
\nGive information:\u00a0\u201cGuests are arriving at 1pm tomorrow. Your sheets need to be in the laundry room by 9am tomorrow morning.\u201d
\nGive choices:\u00a0\u201cDo you want to clean your room now or tomorrow morning when you strip the sheets?\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead of:\u00a0\u201cHow many times do I need to tell you to set the table!\u201d:
\nGive information:\u00a0\u201cDinner gets on the table faster when everyone
\npitches in to set the table\u201d
\nGive choices:\u00a0\u201cWhat would be better for you- are you available to
