Need a quick and nutritious nosh to take along for a summer road trip?<\/p>\n<p>Below is our recipe for homemade granola bars featuring this week\u2019s health ingredient spotlight: oats.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">All About Oats<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Contain soluble fiber that helps counteract and reduce the \u201cbad\u201d or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in our bodies, also reducing overall body cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>Good protein source<\/li>\n<li>Naturally gluten-free but, if sensitive, make sure gluten-free is clearly stated on packaging<\/li>\n<li>Satiating, helpful in weight-loss programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Kosher status<\/span>: Raw, rolled, instant, quick forms are inherently Kosher as long as there are no additives.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Homemade Adventure Bars<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ingredients<\/span>:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>1 very ripe banana, mashed<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00bc cup unsweetened applesauce<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2 tb honey<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1 egg white<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1\u00bc teaspoons cinnamon<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00bd teaspoon vanilla extract<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2 cups rolled oats<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>2 Tablespoons\u00a0flax seeds (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/food\/flax-seeds-new-wonder-food\/\">more on flax seeds<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>1 teaspoon chia seeds (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/food\/chi-chia-seeds-kosher-healthy-easy\/\">more on chia seeds<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Instructions<\/span>:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat oven to 350\u00b0F and spray an 8&#215;8-inch baking dish with cooking spray.<\/li>\n<li>Combine the banana, applesauce, honey, egg white, 1 tsp cinnamon, vanilla extract, in a large bowl.<\/li>\n<li>In a separate bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, flax seeds, and chia seeds. Add to liquid mixture and stir well to combine.<\/li>\n<li>Press mixture into prepared baking dish and sprinkle with remaining \u00bc teaspoon of cinnamon. Bake for 30\u00a0to 35 minutes; for chewier bars bake for 20\u00a0to 25 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Once done, invert onto a cooling rack or hard surface and allow the bars to cool before slicing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Recipe credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/ericasweettooth.com\">ericasweettooth.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Note: Many commercial granola bars have a Beracha Rishona of Ha\u2019adama because the oats remain whole and retain their individual shape.
