Rosenfield asked participants to pick something they were insecure about and write it on their forehead. This latest iteration of an ongoing project focused on Jews living in New York. Faulding picked a word that always bothered him and wrote it on his forehead with a black marker: shvartze.<\/p>\n<p>In a blog <a href=\"http:\/\/zeinshver.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/27\/i-hate-this-word\/\">post<\/a>, Faulding explained his choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always \u2018a shvartze stole my bike;\u2019 or \u2018if the shvartzes get welfare why shouldn\u2019t we?\u2019 \u00a0So, this common excuse that shvartze merely means black doesn\u2019t play well with me,\u201d he blogged on Jan. 26. \u201c<b>Shvartze isn\u2019t Yiddish for Black. Shvartze is Yiddish for Nigger.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Faulding, whose mother is Jewish and father is African-American, said insecurity, rather than anger, prompted his choice of that word. Faulding became observant after a Birthright trip to Israel. He later moved to Crown Heights.<\/p>\n<p>There is a long history of racial tensions in Crown Heights between the Jewish and black communities, tensions that recently flared up once again over a series of random street assaults known as \u2018knock-out attacks.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Still, Faulding says, the reaction to his post has largely been positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA total stranger walked up to me in the street and said \u2018I loved [the post].\u2019 Faulding recounted. \u201cA couple of people said they didn\u2019t realize how harmful that word is and that they won\u2019t use it again. I was amazed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The photo exhibit, \u201cWhat I Be: Jews of New York,\u201d will be on display at the Mister Rogers art space in Crown Heights on Feb. 22.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s it like, being a black chasid?
