The scope of the post-Typhoon Haiyan catastrophe in the Philippines\u00a0continues to grow as fresh reports come in of massive loss of life and\u00a0unimaginable devastation. Evan as our thoughts and prayers are with\u00a0those who have been so terribly affected, there is an urgent need for\u00a0humanitarian assistance and the financial means to provide it.<\/p>\n

You may have seen reports in the media of massive resources being moved\u00a0to that region by the United States \u2014 the USS George Washington carrier\u00a0battle group \u2014 and by the State of Israel, which has deployed hundreds\u00a0of physicians and other medical providers staffing a comprehensive IDF\u00a0mobile hospital including operating rooms and an intensive care unit. Other\u00a0countries are providing resources as well and each of us also has the ability\u00a0to contribute through the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), which is\u00a0collecting funds on behalf of the Jewish community.<\/p>\n

The JDC reports that it has dispatched its own all-too-experienced disaster\u00a0relief professionals to assess the needs in the disaster zone, as well\u00a0as working with the IDF, Magen David Adom, Israel\u2019s Embassy in the\u00a0Philippines, UNICEF and other organizations.<\/p>\n

The JDC advises that it will allocate funds in the following manner:<\/p>\n

One third of funding (depending upon the amount of money raised)\u00a0to immediate relief \u2014 food, water, shelter, medical assistance and\u00a0then a longer term focus upon developing sustainable projects with\u00a0vulnerable populations that have been impacted by the disaster.<\/p>\n

Such programs can include infrastructure \u2014 the reconstruction\u00a0of schools, hospitals, playgrounds that have been destroyed, and\u00a0an additional set of programs that include training and capacity\u00a0building through community development, psychosocial\/post trauma,\u00a0education, focusing upon the most vulnerable populations, children,\u00a0elderly, women and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Wherever possible priority is given to working with local partners to\u00a0build capacity and ensure sustainability. Where appropriate the JDC\u00a0will use Israeli expertise, as well as utilize JDC’s in-house expertise.<\/p>\n

The Philippines, a country that was nearly unique among nations in opening\u00a0its doors to escapees from the Holocaust, needs our help now. Please give\u00a0generously.<\/p>\n
