{"id":31304,"date":"2013-02-28T22:13:10","date_gmt":"2013-02-28T22:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=31304"},"modified":"2017-05-01T07:32:06","modified_gmt":"2017-05-01T12:32:06","slug":"is-that-lchaim-worthwhile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/health\/physical-health\/is-that-lchaim-worthwhile\/","title":{"rendered":"Is That <em>L\u2019Chaim<\/em> Worthwhile?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Isn\u2019t it a wonderful custom that we have?\u00a0 We take a small shot of whisky, say \u201c<em>l\u2019chaim<\/em>!\u201d and swig it down.\u00a0 According to Rabbi Shraga Simmons of Aish HaTorah, the custom of saying &#8220;<em>l\u2019chaim<\/em>&#8221; when drinking wine is first mentioned in &#8220;Machzor Vitri&#8221; 80, s.v. &#8220;Shnayim.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At one time, they used to give wine to the condemned so that their execution would be less painful for them &#8211; (source: &#8220;Midrash Tanchuma&#8221; Parshat Pekudei 2).\u00a0 Jews started to say &#8220;<em>l\u2019chaim<\/em>&#8221; (which means &#8220;to life&#8221;) before drinking wine to distinguish from this and to emphasize that drinking wine should be for life &#8211; (source: &#8220;Kol Boh&#8221; 25 s.v &#8220;U&#8217;B&#8217;Seudat&#8221;) and not for death.\u00a0 There is an ongoing discussion about the harm versus the health benefits of drinking alcohol.\u00a0 Let\u2019s try to sort it out.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol, or ethyl alcohol (ethanol), refers to the intoxicating ingredient found in wine, beer and hard liquor.\u00a0 Alcohol arises naturally from carbohydrates when certain micro-organisms metabolize them in the absence of oxygen, called fermentation.\u00a0 Beer, wine and other liquor contain different amounts of alcohol.\u00a0 The amount of alcohol in distilled liquor is known as &#8220;proof.&#8221; \u00a0Proof refers to the amount of alcohol in the liquor; for example, 100 proof liquor contains 50% alcohol, 40 proof liquor contains 20% alcohol, and so on.\u00a0 Traditional wine has approximately 8-14% alcohol, while regular beer has 4-6% alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000001341992XSmall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31321 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000001341992XSmall-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"wine barrels\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000001341992XSmall-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000001341992XSmall.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Recent studies show that moderate use of alcohol may have a beneficial effect on the coronary system.\u00a0 In general, for healthy people, one drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men would be considered the maximum amount of alcohol consumption to be considered moderate use.\u00a0 (By healthy people, we are referring to non-pregnant women, individuals not addicted to alcohol, and people without pre-existing medical conditions, among others).\u00a0 However, the amount of alcohol that a person can drink safely is highly individual, depending on genetics, age, sex, weight and family history,<\/p>\n<p>According to the Mayo Clinic, moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits. It may:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce your risk of developing heart disease<\/li>\n<li>Reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack<\/li>\n<li>Possibly reduce your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes<\/li>\n<li>Lower your risk of gallstones<\/li>\n<li>Possibly reduce your risk of diabetes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even so, say the people at Mayo, the evidence about the possible health benefits of alcohol isn&#8217;t certain, and alcohol may not benefit everyone who drinks. Moderate alcohol use may be of most benefit only if you&#8217;re an older adult or if you have existing risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol. If you&#8217;re a middle-aged or younger adult, some evidence shows that even moderate alcohol use may cause more harm than good. In fact, if you&#8217;re a woman and drink alcohol, talk to your doctor about taking supplemental folate to help reduce the risk of breast cancer associated with alcohol use. You can take other steps to benefit your cardiovascular health besides drinking \u2014 eating a healthy diet and exercising, for example.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that if you choose to drink alcohol, you should do so only in moderation \u2014 up to one drink a day for women or two drinks a day for men.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of one drink include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Beer:<\/b>\u00a012 fluid ounces (355 milliliters)<\/li>\n<li><b>Wine:<\/b>\u00a05 fluid ounces (148 milliliters)<\/li>\n<li><b>Distilled spirits (80 proof):<\/b>\u00a01.5 fluid ounces (44 milliliters)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are other situations in which the risks of alcohol use may outweigh possible health benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;re pregnant or trying to become pregnant<\/li>\n<li>You take medications that can interact with alcohol<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ve had a previous hemorrhagic stroke<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ve been diagnosed with alcoholism or alcohol abuse<\/li>\n<li>You have liver or pancreatic disease<\/li>\n<li>You have heart failure or you&#8217;ve been told you have a weak heart or dilated cardiomyopathy<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re planning to drive a vehicle or operate machinery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We have to be very careful about our drinking.\u00a0 This is something that when goes beyond the limits can end tragically.\u00a0 There is always the danger of G-d forbid an accident, but just as dangerous is the possibility of alcohol addiction which can lead to cirrhoses of the liver and cancer.\u00a0 Ultimately, the person would need a liver transplant to survive.\u00a0 The complications also include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen)<\/li>\n<li>Variceal hemorrhage (bleeding in the upper stomach and esophagus from ruptured blood vessels)<\/li>\n<li>Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a form of peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdomen), which is associated with ascites. Other bacterial infections are also a common complication of cirrhosis.<\/li>\n<li>Hepatic encephalopathy (damage to the brain). Impaired brain function occurs when the liver cannot detoxify harmful substances, and can lead to coma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having a <em>l\u2019chaim<\/em>\u00a0is wonderful.\u00a0 I highly recommend it and it can even be a heart-healthy thing to do.\u00a0 But anything beyond the moderate levels we have enumerated are not good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/ou-images\/content\/alans_fitness.JPG\" alt=\"image\" width=\"126\" height=\"126\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Alan Freishtat<\/strong> is an A.C.E.
