{"id":27850,"date":"2012-07-03T21:55:23","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T21:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=27850"},"modified":"2017-01-22T08:41:04","modified_gmt":"2017-01-22T13:41:04","slug":"eat-this-take-years-off-age-aliza-beer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/health\/mental-health\/eat-this-take-years-off-age-aliza-beer\/","title":{"rendered":"Eat This and Take Years Off Your Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I awoke this morning only to discover a new wrinkle, an unwelcome addition with far too many friends to count. \u00a0Aging is a natural phenomenon in a human life cycle. \u00a0It cannot be prevented, and as we age our bodies will change and deteriorate.<\/p>\n<p>Wrinkles and memory loss are just two of the many manifestations of aging. \u00a0A higher risk of contracting diseases like cancer, developing Alzheimer\u2019s, elevated blood pressure, and cardiac failures are all associated with it.<\/p>\n<p>We cannot reverse the aging process, but we can slow it down by eating the right kinds of food and living healthfully. \u00a0In general, keep your calorie and saturated fat intake down; eat plenty of whole grains, oily fish, fruits, and vegetables; cut down on salt and sugar. \u00a0There are ten specific anti-aging foods that will help you in your fight against Mother Nature, and should be regularly included in your diet.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avocado:<\/strong> this fruit is a good source of monounsaturated fat and reduces the LDL cholesterol. \u00a0It also is an excellent source of vitamin E that will help prevent skin aging and alleviate menopausal hot flashes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Berries:<\/strong> All black and blue berries contain phytochemicals, which help protect the body against free radicals and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000018575193XSmall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-post-27850 wp-image-27861\" title=\"iStock_000018575193XSmall\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000018575193XSmall-e1341350918933-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000018575193XSmall-e1341350918933-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/iStock_000018575193XSmall-e1341350918933.jpg 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a> aging. \u00a0Blueberries are known to have memory-boosting potential.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cruciferous vegetables:<\/strong> includes cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, turnip, brussel sprouts, radish, and watercress. \u00a0These vegetables assist the body in its fight against toxins and cancer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Garlic:<\/strong> Eating a clove of garlic a day helps keep cancer and heart disease away. \u00a0A 1994 study in Iowa suggested that women who ate a clove of garlic at least once a week were 50% less likely to develop colon cancer. \u00a0Another study in India found that garlic reduced cholesterol levels and was more effective at blood thinning than aspirin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ginger:<\/strong> can be used to boost digestive and circulatory systems and helps alleviate rheumatic aches and pains.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nuts:<\/strong> They are high in calories and fat, but in small amounts are a good source of minerals, especially walnuts and brazil nuts. \u00a0They enhance the digestive and immune systems, help control\/prevent cancer, and control cholesterol levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soy:<\/strong> Helps menopausal women maintain estrogen levels and assuage hot flashes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whole-meal pasta and brown rice:<\/strong> These are complex carbohydrates that supply energy throughout the day&#8211;helpful at a period in your life when your energy can be low.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watermelon:<\/strong> Both flesh and seeds are nutritious and help protect against free radical damage and aging.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water:<\/strong> Drink at least 8 cups of water a day. \u00a0It helps us get rid of the toxins and waste from our bodies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Scientists at the USDA have developed a ratio scale that measures the antioxidant content of various plant foods. \u00a0The scale is called ORAC \u2013 Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. \u00a0They found that a small group of \u201csuper foods\u201d have up to twenty times the antioxidant power of other foods. \u00a0It is recommended that one consumes 3,000 ORAC units a day, which is not too difficult: \u00bd cup of blueberries are 2,400 units.<\/p>\n<table>\n<colgroup>\n<col width=\"196\" \/>\n<col width=\"181\" \/><\/colgroup>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Food<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>ORAC Score<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Prunes<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">5,770<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Raisins<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2,830<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Blueberries<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2,400<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Blackberries<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2,036<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kale<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1,770<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Strawberries<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1,540<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Spinach<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1,260<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Raspberries<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1,220<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We are what we eat.
