{"id":12427,"date":"2009-02-04T01:16:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-04T01:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_beshalach_sent_of_a_nation\/"},"modified":"2015-10-30T03:44:06","modified_gmt":"2015-10-30T08:44:06","slug":"parshat_beshalach_sent_of_a_nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_beshalach_sent_of_a_nation\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Beshalach: Sent of a Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let us split atoms if not hairs.<\/p>\n<p>The ABCs have already been<\/p>\n<p>Split, as have the pithy proceeds<\/p>\n<p>From our last venture together\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Is it any less a miracle when things<\/p>\n<p>Merge together than when things<\/p>\n<p>Split\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0apart?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course not!<\/p>\n<p>But in this natural-until-proven-innocent<\/p>\n<p>Age of ours, where the purity of a newborn<\/p>\n<p>Child can be diminished to a bacterial woops,<\/p>\n<p>It may take a supernatural split to show how<\/p>\n<p>Even the flow-and-ebb of things together really<\/p>\n<p>Is as miraculous as\u2026well, as miraculous as we<\/p>\n<p>Make it!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Without miracles we would think everything was<\/p>\n<p>Natural<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Without nature we would think everything was<\/p>\n<p>Miraculous<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A true miracle is taking that which is natural and<\/p>\n<p>Making it\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0miraculous<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>It happened when<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Pharaoh sent out<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The people<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Strange, almost miraculous,<\/p>\n<p>For it would seem two total<\/p>\n<p>Opposites attract here\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(<i>Pharaoh<\/i>: the epitome of exile;<\/p>\n<p><i>Sent out<\/i>: the epitome of freedom)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Perhaps<\/p>\n<p>An oxymoronic a statement<\/p>\n<p>As \u201cclass act\u201d \u2013 people with<\/p>\n<p>Real class do not have to act<\/p>\n<p>And people who do, generally<\/p>\n<p>Do not have much real class\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ah, but this is true freedom:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is a freedom, let us call<\/p>\n<p>It Freedom Lite, a fat-free liberation<\/p>\n<p>With fewer calories but also with much<\/p>\n<p>Less taste: this freedom allows for one to<\/p>\n<p>Be free today from the prisons of yesterday;<\/p>\n<p>However, in this freedom there is no fat, no<\/p>\n<p>Taste, the prisoner crawls away with what he<\/p>\n<p>Came (which is really less than what he had),<\/p>\n<p>Broken, angry, sad \u2013 the upright man that was<\/p>\n<p>Replaced by the bent back that is\u2026 and the cell<\/p>\n<p>Within which he spent an eternity remains as it<\/p>\n<p>Was, a cell: hungrily awaiting its next victim\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then there is a freedom, a true freedom, where<\/p>\n<p>The prisoner leaves so much stronger than he came:<\/p>\n<p>The warden himself, the epitome of all things cell-<\/p>\n<p>Ular, the master of chain and shackle alone opens<\/p>\n<p>The door, the bars themselves become symbols of<\/p>\n<p>Freedom, the fences themselves become signs of<\/p>\n<p>Exodus, the watchtowers and sirens themselves<\/p>\n<p>Shout out that this here prisoner walks freely,<\/p>\n<p>Proud, his head held high and his bags stuffed<\/p>\n<p>To the brim with all the knowledge, all the riches<\/p>\n<p>All the treasures, all the strengths he has taken<\/p>\n<p>From the unhealthy cell that was to the healthiest<\/p>\n<p>Of cells that is\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Egypt, in the beginning a place of confinement,<\/p>\n<p>A place that would do anything to deny G-d\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>Existence, anything to believe that nature is not<\/p>\n<p>Miraculous, anything to drown the cry of a soul<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ah, but now, today, Pharaoh the leader of this Egypt<\/p>\n<p>Has sent out the people, the leader of exile himself has<\/p>\n<p>Declared freedom\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The people did not leave quietly, decimated, ashamed,<\/p>\n<p>Their souls intact but their bodies beaten and scarred:<\/p>\n<p>No, they left with a boom and bang, the physical as<\/p>\n<p>Complete as the spiritual, sent out by the physical,<\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s nemesis, itself: the entire universe knew they<\/p>\n<p>Were leaving, a proud nation heading for Mount Sinai and<\/p>\n<p>The Promised Land<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When the body which imprisoned your soul is the one<\/p>\n<p>To send you to freedom, you know you are truly free.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
