{"id":12366,"date":"2009-01-15T04:36:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-15T04:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_shemot_brand_names\/"},"modified":"2016-11-28T08:13:56","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T13:13:56","slug":"parshat_shemot_brand_names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_shemot_brand_names\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Shemot: Brand Names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some people can name their price;<\/p>\n<p>Others can price their names\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We here shall do neither:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our names are priceless<\/p>\n<p>And our prices shall remain<\/p>\n<p>Nameless<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Instead let us talk of names:<\/p>\n<p>Their character, personality<\/p>\n<p>And reason<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As any fence can attest, the<\/p>\n<p>Human Being loves to straddle \u2013<\/p>\n<p>That is: man can never resist placing<\/p>\n<p>One foot on the platform while the other<\/p>\n<p>Reaches for the train and if I were an anthropologist<\/p>\n<p>(And who isn\u2019t?) I\u2019d venture to say it\u2019s because we fear<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the static comfort of today for the dynamic<\/p>\n<p>Possibility of tomorrow<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the Torah, which inspires these words, is alive,<\/p>\n<p>Constantly in motion, helping us grow, moving us<\/p>\n<p>Onward, ensuring our present aspiration never becomes<\/p>\n<p>Our future prison<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, as we straddle any chain-link, barbwire or even electric<\/p>\n<p>The words of truth constantly pushes us off and turns us on to<\/p>\n<p>Something more \u2013 while a world tries to create a fence, a barrier<\/p>\n<p>Between what is body and what is soul, between what is who we are<\/p>\n<p>And how we express ourselves, the Torah bridges the gap, and with<\/p>\n<p>Every mitzvah, connection, the gap between what we believe and what<\/p>\n<p>We do is full-filled, the barrier greatly dividing the potential of our purity<\/p>\n<p>And the action of our flesh is torn down, recycled and turned into a bridge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And it begins now, in Egypt, in the land of borders:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>And these are the names<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Of the Children of Israel<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Who were coming to Egypt<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Egypt, a place of differences, where<\/p>\n<p>The possibility for disconnect, hate<\/p>\n<p>And anger is very real and the love<\/p>\n<p>And unity most difficult to come by \u2013<\/p>\n<p>You see, in Egypt, when one looks<\/p>\n<p>At his brother he sees a different body<\/p>\n<p>With a different face and a different name;<\/p>\n<p>In Egypt one can very easily be blind to the<\/p>\n<p>Soul which unites us all and binds us together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>These are the names<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Souls are never exiled, be it in Egypt<\/p>\n<p>Of then or Egypt of today; souls by<\/p>\n<p>Definition are in constant connect\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It is merely the names, the expressions,<\/p>\n<p>The body with which one relates to another,<\/p>\n<p>That is imprisoned in a state of unawareness<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is for name recognition and name tags,<\/p>\n<p>Knowing our names, how we relate to the outside world,<\/p>\n<p>Is just as divine as our souls, how we relate to the inside<\/p>\n<p>World<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And this is the purpose of Egypt in the first place:<\/p>\n<p>Going down into the confines so that we can turn<\/p>\n<p>Them into expansion, the names descending down<\/p>\n<p>Low so that they reflect how they too are really high<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Names aren\u2019t who we are;<\/p>\n<p>They merely reflect who we are<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And we inspire for the<\/p>\n<p>Two to walk hand in hand:<\/p>\n<p>The soul reflected in the name<\/p>\n<p>The name reflecting the soul<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>These are the names<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Names plural:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the soul, essence we are one;<\/p>\n<p>Regarding our names, expressions we are plural \u2013<\/p>\n<p>We each express ourselves in our own unique way.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose is to use our names, each our particular<\/p>\n<p>Expressions to convey the unity that is our soul \u2013<\/p>\n<p>When that happens we arise out of Egypt unified<\/p>\n<p>Mind, body and soul<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hey, that\u2019s the name game;<\/p>\n<p>You gonna be a player?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
