{"id":12314,"date":"2008-12-31T09:05:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-31T09:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_vayigash_a_poetic_approach_to_life\/"},"modified":"2015-10-30T03:10:29","modified_gmt":"2015-10-30T08:10:29","slug":"parshat_vayigash_a_poetic_approach_to_life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_vayigash_a_poetic_approach_to_life\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Vayigash: A Poetic Approach to Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some things are beyond approach;<\/p>\n<p>The things that are worth it aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It all really does depend on one\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>Approach; a healthy approach will<\/p>\n<p>Have healthy consequences; not such<\/p>\n<p>A healthy approach\u2026 well, let\u2019s just<\/p>\n<p>Say those consequences better have a<\/p>\n<p>Three-piece, foulard lawyer<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With that said, let us approach the<\/p>\n<p>Concept of approach with some<\/p>\n<p>Sensitivity, if not downright caution:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How to broach approach?<\/p>\n<p>Only a direct approach would<\/p>\n<p>Do approach justice, I\u2019m sure<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Things on the same page do not<\/p>\n<p>Require approach: a man need not<\/p>\n<p>Approach his own mind to know<\/p>\n<p>What he himself is thinking; just<\/p>\n<p>As a woman need not approach<\/p>\n<p>Her own heart to know what she<\/p>\n<p>Herself is feeling (Obviously we<\/p>\n<p>Talk here of a man and woman not<\/p>\n<p>Delusional or in denial \u2013 that would<\/p>\n<p>Be a whole other poem altogether)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Things on different pages \u2013 most<\/p>\n<p>Certainly things in different books<\/p>\n<p>On different shelves \u2013 require an<\/p>\n<p>Approach of some extent, where<\/p>\n<p>One or the other, or both parties<\/p>\n<p>Involved approach one another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Yehuda approached him<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two entities, Yehuda and Yosef;<\/p>\n<p>Both kings in their own right, kings<\/p>\n<p>And the fathers of kings, royalty,<\/p>\n<p>Personalities both so illustrious<\/p>\n<p>And both so profound one would<\/p>\n<p>Be hard pressed to envision them<\/p>\n<p>Both in the same room, together<\/p>\n<p>Without one trying to outwit the<\/p>\n<p>Other<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But these aren\u2019t regular men; their<\/p>\n<p>Greatness does not highlight another\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>Weakness; their luminance does not<\/p>\n<p>Overshadow another\u2019s light \u2013 indeed,<\/p>\n<p>They inspire, their power makes all<\/p>\n<p>Around them more powerful, their<\/p>\n<p>Strength makes all around them<\/p>\n<p>Stronger<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This was Yehuda\u2019s approach to<\/p>\n<p>Yosef, bridging the gaps created<\/p>\n<p>Before, transcending the differences<\/p>\n<p>Of a time passed \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Approaching perfection<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And when that happens\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Do not be afraid of descending to Egypt<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>For as a great nation I shall establish<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You there<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I will go down with you to Egypt<\/p>\n<p>And I will also bring you up<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When we are one, united, embracing one<\/p>\n<p>Another, there is no need to fear any descent,<\/p>\n<p>Not even into the confines of Egypt \u2013 for when<\/p>\n<p>We are one, when we approach one another<\/p>\n<p>He is with us\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When we approach \u2013 not reproach \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Each other, then even in Egypt<\/p>\n<p>In the most stifling of all situations,<\/p>\n<p>We could do anything, light anything<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Tis indeed an approach to life<\/p>\n<p>An approach that brings life<\/p>\n<p>An approach that gives life\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If that is not a poetic approach<\/p>\n<p>What is?<\/p>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
