{"id":12253,"date":"2008-12-11T04:58:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-11T04:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_vayishlach_heaven_sent\/"},"modified":"2016-11-28T07:33:27","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T12:33:27","slug":"parshat_vayishlach_heaven_sent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_vayishlach_heaven_sent\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Vayishlach: Heaven Sent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let us get vertical \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Introvertical<\/p>\n<p>Extrovertical<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An intro to the introvert:<\/p>\n<p>A state of static and stigma,<\/p>\n<p>Always looking in, too afraid<\/p>\n<p>To look out; it is the natural state,<\/p>\n<p>Or so it convinces itself \u2013 after all,<\/p>\n<p>We are all different people with<\/p>\n<p>Different looks and outlooks \u2013 why<\/p>\n<p>Then should it go beyond the \u201cme\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And embrace the \u201cyou\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An excerpt to the extrovert:<\/p>\n<p>Of the gregarious persuasion,<\/p>\n<p>Going beyond the self. Now we<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t mean one of those who is<\/p>\n<p>Always looking away because it<\/p>\n<p>Fears what it might find when looking<\/p>\n<p>In, we don\u2019t speak of those who feel a<\/p>\n<p>Need to control the outside world<\/p>\n<p>Because their inside world is a total<\/p>\n<p>Mess\u2026 No, we speak of the extrovert<\/p>\n<p>In the positive sense of the term, always<\/p>\n<p>Going beyond, pushing the envelope,<\/p>\n<p>Enveloped within the dreams and possibilities<\/p>\n<p>Of someone daring enough to look passed the<\/p>\n<p>Self yet secure enough to live in the present.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the question is: how to know when going out of<\/p>\n<p>Oneself is a positive thing and when it is a negative?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are all subjective \u2013 if you say you aren\u2019t, well then,<\/p>\n<p>My point exactly \u2013 so how to know when where we go<\/p>\n<p>Is healthy or not; how do we know if the places we go<\/p>\n<p>Are driven by the soul\u2019s purity or the body\u2019s selfishness?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Yaakov sent angels<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ahead of him to<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Esau his brother<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are times when we must face the parts closest to us<\/p>\n<p>That are also the furthest away; times when the fragments in our<\/p>\n<p>Lives must be acknowledged and bridged, mended, put back<\/p>\n<p>Together and made whole again \u2013 moments when we must<\/p>\n<p>Leave what is safe and secure for the things that need us to<\/p>\n<p>Make them safe and secure. And these moments need purity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>To the land of Seir<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The field of Edom<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When heading towards all that is cold and dark, one would do well<\/p>\n<p>To ensure their flame, their candle is burning vibrantly and passionately.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And one does this by first sending the purist parts, the parts untouched and<\/p>\n<p>Untouchable, the parts heaven sent, the angels within, to Esau, that piece of<\/p>\n<p>Darkness that needs to be turned to light, the ice that needs to be thawed and<\/p>\n<p>Made warm. Only then, once the ground rules are set, once we know beyond<\/p>\n<p>Any doubt \u2013 reasonable or otherwise \u2013 that our core is secure and our purpose<\/p>\n<p>True, then and only then can we fight for what is true \u2013 only after we ascertain<\/p>\n<p>That the playing field can only make us lighter and never darker, then and only<\/p>\n<p>Then can we approach our brother, ourselves, the parts that seem to have broken<\/p>\n<p>And separated \u2013 only then can we read passed the intro and become the extrovert\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is only through messengers heaven sent, that heaven can approach earth;<\/p>\n<p>Only through the pure angels within us all can humanity embrace a brother.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
