{"id":12214,"date":"2008-11-20T11:43:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-20T11:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_chayei_sarah_the_poetry_of_life\/"},"modified":"2015-10-30T02:32:44","modified_gmt":"2015-10-30T07:32:44","slug":"parshat_chayei_sarah_the_poetry_of_life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_chayei_sarah_the_poetry_of_life\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Chayei Sarah: The Poetry of Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What is it about Life<\/p>\n<p>That gets people breathing<\/p>\n<p>Heavy?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here begins a sentence \u2013<\/p>\n<p>A life sentence:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One\u2019s mouth or nostrils may open and<\/p>\n<p>Hardly ever close, blowing air in and<\/p>\n<p>Blowing air out (cold air, hot air, desp-air),<\/p>\n<p>Without ever actually breathing, breathing<\/p>\n<p>Life into oneself, breathing Life into one\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>Surroundings<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another\u2019s mouth may remain closed,<\/p>\n<p>Blowing nothing, not even a chance;<\/p>\n<p>Neither does this one wait to exhale<\/p>\n<p>Or inhale the toxins of a false universe;<\/p>\n<p>This one is not holding the breath nor<\/p>\n<p>Dropping the proverbial bomb \u2013 this<\/p>\n<p>One merely breathes, breathes life, life<\/p>\n<p>Into oneself, life into others, life into<\/p>\n<p>The world<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So tell me who is more alive?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One whose body does everything right<\/p>\n<p>But whose soul is stagnant;<\/p>\n<p>Or one whose soul pulsates in life<\/p>\n<p>But whose body lies dormant?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It seems:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not all with a beating heart<\/p>\n<p>Are of the living<\/p>\n<p>And not all who rest in peace<\/p>\n<p>Are of the deceased<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It seems:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It takes more than blood flow<\/p>\n<p>For a man to be passionate<\/p>\n<p>Just as it takes less than dirt<\/p>\n<p>For a man to be buried<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So what, pray tell, is Life<\/p>\n<p>And what does it mean to be alive?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>It was<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The life<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Of Sarah<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We<\/p>\n<p>As human beings of the bodily form<\/p>\n<p>Tend to measure life in bodily terms<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The person breathes, sleeps, wakes, eats, moves,<\/p>\n<p>Goes through the motions and emotions \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The person\u2019s alive!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But we<\/p>\n<p>As human beings of the soul essentiality<\/p>\n<p>Also know life is more than motion or emotion<\/p>\n<p>Life is passion, life is vibrancy, life is contagious \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Life is connecting to the Source of Life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Poetry of Life, like all poetry, at times gets subtle<\/p>\n<p>(Perhaps a euphemism for vague);<\/p>\n<p>Thus a Life barometer:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If one is alive, breathing with a purpose and passion,<\/p>\n<p>Burning with a soul desire and kindled spirit but the<\/p>\n<p>World around, the people around are as dead as an<\/p>\n<p>Unplugged mike, as cold and heartless as an ice cube,<\/p>\n<p>Then such a life, such a purpose, passion, is a dishonest<\/p>\n<p>Fa\u00e7ade, deader even than that unplugged microphone<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You see Life, by living definition, makes everything<\/p>\n<p>Around it come alive; Life, by living association, in-<\/p>\n<p>Spires everything in its vicinity to breathe soul, all<\/p>\n<p>In its neighborhood to<\/p>\n<p>Rise up for Life<\/p>\n<p>Size up for Life<\/p>\n<p>Skies up and get down<\/p>\n<p>For Life<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is the Life of Sarah:<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of years since<\/p>\n<p>She has last parted her<\/p>\n<p>Lips, but every second<\/p>\n<p>She breathes, breathes<\/p>\n<p>Life into her children,<\/p>\n<p>Imparts purpose and<\/p>\n<p>Passion within each<\/p>\n<p>And every one of us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sarah is connected to the<\/p>\n<p>Source of all Life and that<\/p>\n<p>Never fades, only grows:<\/p>\n<p>Chayei Sarah, the Life of<\/p>\n<p>Sarah, is as alive today<\/p>\n<p>As it was all those years<\/p>\n<p>Ago (perhaps more so, for<\/p>\n<p>Living things never stop<\/p>\n<p>Growing)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is as simple as life and death.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the bottom- (not end- or tag-) line:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lines of Torah are lines of Life,<\/p>\n<p>Lifelines<\/p>\n<p>One has merely to read and study the words, the lines<\/p>\n<p>Of Torah, of Life, for the living to become alive and<\/p>\n<p>The alive to throb with passion and spirit<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is the life of our mother; and this is the life of we,<\/p>\n<p>Her children alive and well!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
