{"id":12149,"date":"2008-10-30T07:47:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T07:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_noach_arkeology_and_arkitecture\/"},"modified":"2015-10-29T11:45:16","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T16:45:16","slug":"parshat_noach_arkeology_and_arkitecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_noach_arkeology_and_arkitecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Noach: Arkeology &#038; Arkitecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whoosh<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The floodgates swing wide open<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wash<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The world accosted by a storm:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Waters, knowledge, ideas, in many forms<\/p>\n<p>And deforms, in countless texts and textures,<\/p>\n<p>Some wet, others dry, some deep as a cut, others<\/p>\n<p>Shallow as a grave, some sharp as a tongue, others<\/p>\n<p>Blunt as a fact, flood the mind like a rapid river that<\/p>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t give a dam\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emotions swirl in a violent tempest: temper long lost and<\/p>\n<p>Not soon found; a storm of feelings, influences, hurts, loves<\/p>\n<p>And immune apathies rages on like an angry school principle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(If we would leave the pen for the pun, we\u2019d say:<\/p>\n<p>The world is delugenal.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Arms flail and try to swim, but it\u2019s no use.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps there\u2019s a shout for help but if there<\/p>\n<p>Is it only sounds like an echo reverberating<\/p>\n<p>Off the empty walls of a cavernous situation<\/p>\n<p>Without even a reply to halt the pathetic, <span style=\"font-size: 15pt;\">Help!<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">Help!<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 7pt;\">Help!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gulp and begin to drown\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Come<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>You and your household<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>To the ark<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ark these words<\/p>\n<p>(Please):<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(This here might be the ark side of the moon.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>True, there will be flood and storm-brought confusion<\/p>\n<p>In this universe \u2013 it is the modus operandi of universes<\/p>\n<p>Everywhere \u2013 however, it is also (if not more) true that<\/p>\n<p>We have the ability to weather (not whether) the storm<\/p>\n<p>And beat the flooding \u2013 this is the modus operandi of<\/p>\n<p>People everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is what those of the English persuasion would call an Ark;<\/p>\n<p>We of the Holy Tongue persuasion (and who isn\u2019t persuaded<\/p>\n<p>In that way, at least to some extent) would call it a <i>Tayvah<\/i>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Tayvah<\/i>, besides for being an ark, a vessel in which to ride waves<\/p>\n<p>Of the nautical kind, also translates as Word, a vessel with which to<\/p>\n<p>Ride waves of a much different \u2013 and yet just as stormy \u2013 kind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What type of ark can protect us from the kind of flood that isn\u2019t wet?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Words \u2013 words of prayer, words of torah, words of comfort, words of peace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Just as the ark back then was an island of calm on a sea of turmoil<\/p>\n<p>So too is today\u2019s ark \u2013 a prayer in the morning, a study session in the<\/p>\n<p>Evening \u2013 a slice of peaceful harmony in a deluge of fragmented confusion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Go forth from the ark<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But an ark, a place of peace and harmony, a moment of<\/p>\n<p>Sincerity and unity, where even animals can live together,<\/p>\n<p>Is not a place, a moment, from which one goes forth easily.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But we do not live for what is easy; we live for what is right:<\/p>\n<p>True we must have our arks, the words of prayer and torah<\/p>\n<p>With which to guide us through the storm that is life, but we<\/p>\n<p>Cannot remain boxed into our own little world \u2013 we\u2019ve got to<\/p>\n<p>Go forth from the ark, lest we become as stale as the flood itself.<\/p>\n<p>We must go forth and bring the ark, the letters forth with us<\/p>\n<p>So that a flood never drowns anyone ever again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Arkeology &amp; Arkitecture:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The study and texture of Noah\u2019s \u2013 and our \u2013 ark<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps an arketype if you will.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
