{"id":12120,"date":"2008-10-23T11:39:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-23T11:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_bereishit_a_beginners_guide_to_the_beginning\/"},"modified":"2015-10-29T11:42:35","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T16:42:35","slug":"parshat_bereishit_a_beginners_guide_to_the_beginning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_bereishit_a_beginners_guide_to_the_beginning\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Bereishit: A Beginners Guide to the Beginning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beginning words:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All beginnings are difficult \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Especially difficult beginnings,<\/p>\n<p>Where nothing exists before<\/p>\n<p>And nothing exists after if<\/p>\n<p>The beginning ceases to begin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some make ends meet: taking two<\/p>\n<p>Different points and bringing them<\/p>\n<p>Together<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here we make beginnings<\/p>\n<p>(And after we make beginnings meet):<\/p>\n<p>Taking two different points and<\/p>\n<p>Creating them, separating them,<\/p>\n<p>(For what is creation if not separation?)<\/p>\n<p>But only so that later they can be brought<\/p>\n<p>Back together again in a much deeper way<\/p>\n<p>(For what is separation if not a means to unity?)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Creation is really very sad:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before the beginning everything is one<\/p>\n<p>And only, consumed within the source:<\/p>\n<p>Body and soul do not exist for they are in<\/p>\n<p>A place where the white space between the<\/p>\n<p>Ink, the pauses between each note, do not<\/p>\n<p>&amp;nbsp\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Exist.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only He alone exists and He is everything.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before the beginning these words are<\/p>\n<p>Of one inkwell, without form, feeling,<\/p>\n<p>Of function<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>In the beginning<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>G-d created<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The heavens<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And the earths<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then separation: G-d created,<\/p>\n<p>Separated heaven and earth,<\/p>\n<p>Body and soul, matter and<\/p>\n<p>Spirit \u2013 and a universe of<\/p>\n<p>Cold darkness, where one<\/p>\n<p>Can look at a fa\u00e7ade and<\/p>\n<p>Not see its purpose, look<\/p>\n<p>At a face and only see pain,<\/p>\n<p>Came into being\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>The earth was astonishingly empty<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Darkness on the surface of the deep<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But then:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>G-d said<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Let there be light<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And there was light<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>True, creation, beginnings are<\/p>\n<p>About leaving the comfort zone<\/p>\n<p>Of before, where everything is one<\/p>\n<p>And at home, for a place that is foreign<\/p>\n<p>And alone, where we do not recognize<\/p>\n<p>From where we come and to where we<\/p>\n<p>Go, but, without the fragmentation, with-<\/p>\n<p>Out the darkness we could never have the<\/p>\n<p>Light, without the black ink of limitation<\/p>\n<p>We could never have the white page of purity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are words, letters, poetry \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Creating light, ideas, prospects,<\/p>\n<p>By separating inks, letter, words,<\/p>\n<p>And bringing them back together<\/p>\n<p>In a unified message, a cohesive<\/p>\n<p>Whole portraying truth and life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is creation, existence, beginning \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Bringing the letters, the words, fragmented<\/p>\n<p>Particles which surround us and are within<\/p>\n<p>Us, back together and creating with them<\/p>\n<p>Light, happiness, purity and innocence:<\/p>\n<p>Life!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are all beginners \u2013<\/p>\n<p>If we weren\u2019t we\u2019d be enders\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And beginners are always passionate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>May we always be beginning \u2013<\/p>\n<p>And may the beginning always be us:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>May we always be beginning new things \u2013<\/p>\n<p>And may the beginning always be new to us.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
