{"id":12065,"date":"2008-09-18T08:24:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-18T08:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_ki_tavo_coming_into_our_own\/"},"modified":"2016-11-28T03:02:55","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T08:02:55","slug":"parshat_ki_tavo_coming_into_our_own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_ki_tavo_coming_into_our_own\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Ki Tavo: Coming Into Our Own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of comings and goings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is come \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The purpose is come, the time is come,<\/p>\n<p>We have come:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Coming is the difference between life and death:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A being lives his entire life in a desert, a wilderness,<\/p>\n<p>Thinking the routines he knows are the reality that is,<\/p>\n<p>When in fact, the facades he sees, the products he<\/p>\n<p>Worships are nothing but smoke and mirrors, smoke<\/p>\n<p>Because they sure as ice \u2018aint fire, mirrors because<\/p>\n<p>They reflect whatever image we wish to see.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>It will be when you come into the Land<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>That G-d gives you as an inheritance<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This being then comes into a Land, a consciousness, a<\/p>\n<p>State of mind and heart that does not allow for the shell<\/p>\n<p>To become the fruit, does not allow for the hardened<\/p>\n<p>Plastic of the iPod to divert from the inner sound of the<\/p>\n<p>Music, does not allow for the flesh of the body to imprison<\/p>\n<p>The flame of the soul.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What is the difference between a desert and an oasis?<\/p>\n<p>What is the difference between a comatose carcass and<\/p>\n<p>A breathing body \u2013 they are both made of the same earth,<\/p>\n<p>Both have the same limbs, both of the same material?<\/p>\n<p>Ah, but they differ in that one is come, come, come to<\/p>\n<p>Life, passion and purpose, while the other lies decaying<\/p>\n<p>And alone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Life is coming completely into a certain consciousness:<\/p>\n<p>One can be alive without actually living, go through the<\/p>\n<p>Motions, move the limbs, do the do, but remain as dead as<\/p>\n<p>Radio silence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(I\u2019m coming, says the perverbial summa cum loudest;<\/p>\n<p>But saying and doing are two different things.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Life, to come one must come completely \u2013 and that only<\/p>\n<p>Happens when one comes to possess, to settle, to dwell\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>And you possess it and settle it<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If one just comes to be where it\u2019s at, but runs from<\/p>\n<p>Any challenge is that really coming?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If one comes to a realization but stays away from<\/p>\n<p>Being real is that truly coming?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One can come, alone, without neighbors and friends,<\/p>\n<p>Come to a certain clarity while the rest are still vague,<\/p>\n<p>But is that really coming into a Land, is that entering<\/p>\n<p>A state of peace and harmony?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can come to the Land, its borders and limitations;<\/p>\n<p>Or you can come into the Land, into its possibilities and<\/p>\n<p>Dreams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Coming into our own is coming with a<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge that if I come but you remain<\/p>\n<p>Behind, if I have settled my issues but yours<\/p>\n<p>Are still unsettling, if I have possessed my<\/p>\n<p>Part but you are still dispossessed\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Then I haven\u2019t truly come \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>It will be when you come into the Land<\/i> \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Come not as a guest but as an inhabitant<\/p>\n<p>Come not gingerly as a man to a foreign house<\/p>\n<p>But come proudly as a man to a familiar home<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Come not into somebody else\u2019s ideas or thoughts<\/p>\n<p>But come into your own, your own self, your own<\/p>\n<p>Home \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Your own Land<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
