{"id":12045,"date":"2008-09-10T06:16:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-10T06:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_ki_teitzei_going_out_of_my_mind\/"},"modified":"2015-10-29T11:10:07","modified_gmt":"2015-10-29T16:10:07","slug":"parshat_ki_teitzei_going_out_of_my_mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_ki_teitzei_going_out_of_my_mind\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Ki Teitzei: Going out of my Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of goings and comings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes,<\/p>\n<p>In order to come, one must first go;<\/p>\n<p>In order to arrive, one must first leave \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to arrive at a new place,<\/p>\n<p>A new dimension, a holy land,<\/p>\n<p>One must first leave the old place,<\/p>\n<p>The monotonous, mundane take on<\/p>\n<p>Things.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are those who<\/p>\n<p>Have arrived at brilliant conclusions<\/p>\n<p>Without actually ever leaving the limits<\/p>\n<p>Of their own narrow minds, their canyon hearts\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But if one wishes to arrive at a beginning and<\/p>\n<p>Not a conclusion, one must surely first go forth<\/p>\n<p>From the routine that is to the revolution that will be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some things arrive on silver platters \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The important things never do:<\/p>\n<p>If they did, they either aren\u2019t real important\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Or aren\u2019t real silver.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(It\u2019s strange how gold never seems to come on<\/p>\n<p>A silver platter)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes,<\/p>\n<p>In order to come to peace with the world<\/p>\n<p>One must first go to war with the self\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>If you will go out to war<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Against your enemies<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Keep your enemy without very close;<\/p>\n<p>But keep your enemy within even closer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fighting with other people is hurtful;<\/p>\n<p>Fighting with yourself is a must.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One must go out to war, must do battle<\/p>\n<p>With the status quotes that you have begun to<\/p>\n<p>Pass off as your own, must fight the abnormalities<\/p>\n<p>That have become the unfortunate norm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>And G-d will deliver them<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Into your hands and you<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Will capture its captives<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we were to just go out of our minds,<\/p>\n<p>Out of our own little petty squared circles,<\/p>\n<p>The battle would be won.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most times, the battle, the war is lost,<\/p>\n<p>Because we never even go out to fight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we were to just put up a fight against everything<\/p>\n<p>False and artificial how could we, beings true and real, ever<\/p>\n<p>Lose?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>G-d guarantees our victory; all He asks is that we<\/p>\n<p>Go out, get out, and fight, struggle, shed a tear, sweat<\/p>\n<p>A drop, work a little so that we earn what is ours \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, if we don\u2019t go out to war, if we never<\/p>\n<p>Challenge what is, how could the peace be complete,<\/p>\n<p>How could we ever know if what we haven\u2019t done,<\/p>\n<p>Haven\u2019t earned, haven\u2019t achieved, is real and eternal?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we never go out of our minds how could we ever<\/p>\n<p>Know if what we are getting into is pure or just a figment<\/p>\n<p>Of our imagination?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Going out to war is not some anarchistic form of violence:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is merely questioning everything, battling every ugly<\/p>\n<p>Thing in this universe \u2013 not killing it \u2013 merely making<\/p>\n<p>It beautiful \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For what is true peace, true victory? Not everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Laying down their arms, but everyone raising them<\/p>\n<p>Up in unison, in harmony, in true, divine peace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you will go out (of yourself)\u2026<\/p>\n<p>You will surely come in (to your own).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
