Be it the journey from<\/p>\n<p>Child to man, from mind to heart, from exile to<\/p>\n<p>Freedom, follower to leader, one must leave what<\/p>\n<p>Was behind so that one can find what is ahead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout there are guideposts, lighthouses, right<\/p>\n<p>Decisions and wrong turns, miles upon miles of asphalt<\/p>\n<p>And abrupt dead-ends, long stretches of wasteland where<\/p>\n<p>No man dwells and short stretches of in-density where too<\/p>\n<p>Many stick their unwanted opinions into others\u2019 privacy \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Such is the nature of the journey and its traveler: at times<\/p>\n<p>A struggle<\/p>\n<p>But never a helpless one!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The point of it all, of any healthy journey, is growth,<\/p>\n<p>Ascent: achieving something otherwise unachievable.<\/p>\n<p>Of course some \u2013 if not most \u2013 would rather sit tight<\/p>\n<p>And not journey altogether but (thank G-d) we don\u2019t<\/p>\n<p>Always get what we want and some journeys are<\/p>\n<p>Inevitable, the only variable \u2013 what we are gonna do<\/p>\n<p>About it (and, sometimes, the weather).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Further notice \u2013 above license reluctantly reinstated)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>This is the service of<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Gershonite families<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>To serve and to carry<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One must leave things behind to move ahead<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s only true with things that hinder our<\/p>\n<p>Travel, like excess baggage and cheap suitcases<\/p>\n<p>With broken wheels and handles; things essential<\/p>\n<p>However, like our souls and holiness, remain with<\/p>\n<p>Us throughout, even and especially in the wilderness<\/p>\n<p>And darkness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And while journeying in the wilderness, though we remain<\/p>\n<p>People of the portable, not setting roots but carrying them<\/p>\n<p>Along so that when we reach our destination they shall be<\/p>\n<p>Stronger than ever, nevertheless, the presence of our roots<\/p>\n<p>And fruit has a most-positive affect on the barren earth, even<\/p>\n<p>Dropping seeds as we move along.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>They shall carry the curtains of the<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><u>Mishkan<\/u> and the Ohel Moed<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today, in exile, we haven\u2019t a physical<\/p>\n<p>Tabernacle but as we journey through<\/p>\n<p>Our wildernesses and deserts, as we move<\/p>\n<p>Closer and closer, we carry the spirit<\/p>\n<p>Of the Divine resting place with us,<\/p>\n<p>Within us, each one of us counted<\/p>\n<p>Because each one of us is a home<\/p>\n<p>For G-d, illuminating even the darkest<\/p>\n<p>Wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And when we carry such holiness, when<\/p>\n<p>We move with such purpose, it moves<\/p>\n<p>Us as well, lifts us up even as we lift it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t words that move but actions:<\/p>\n<p>Enough ink \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s move it!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
