{"id":11700,"date":"2008-05-01T13:41:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-01T13:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_kedoshim_holygraphic\/"},"modified":"2015-10-28T11:52:44","modified_gmt":"2015-10-28T16:52:44","slug":"parshat_kedoshim_holygraphic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_kedoshim_holygraphic\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Kedoshim: Holygraphic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mediocre instruments tend to play mediocre songs.<\/p>\n<p>Bland words tend to tell bland stories.<\/p>\n<p>And mundane people tend to perform mundane acts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(It seems like:)<\/p>\n<p>We are mundane actors playing on a mundane stage \u2013<\/p>\n<p>And though the script may be a work in progress,<\/p>\n<p>Progressively digressing, depressingly repressing,<\/p>\n<p>Our roles are invariably closer to earth than heaven,<\/p>\n<p>More cosmetic than aesthetic \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Minimally inspiring; maximally re: tiring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The only difference between the mundane and the profane<\/p>\n<p>May be that the latter is pro something.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Okay, perhaps the mundane is not as sacrilegious as the profane<\/p>\n<p>But, really, were we born to live mundane lives, to worship<\/p>\n<p>Mediocrity, to be just another dot-commoner in the world wide<\/p>\n<p>Commonwealth, living in a house of the commons?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As anti-establishment as it may sound \u2013<\/p>\n<p>I think \u2013 and hope \u2013 not.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Holy shall you be<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>For holy am I<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Holy script and description;<\/p>\n<p>Holy verse and versatility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To be holy \u2013 to be removed,<\/p>\n<p>To be beyond, uninfluenced<\/p>\n<p>By the pet peeves or pettiness<\/p>\n<p>Of the mundane universe; to be<\/p>\n<p>Separated from all things separating;<\/p>\n<p>To be independent of all things de<\/p>\n<p>Pendent on pendants and pendulums,<\/p>\n<p>Transcending all those things wavering<\/p>\n<p>And twisting in the wind like confused<\/p>\n<p>Dreams come upon a fork in the road and a<\/p>\n<p>Knife in the heart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But how to be holy in an unholy world?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We cannot earn it with our talents nor can<\/p>\n<p>We find it in our wallets; not with long white<\/p>\n<p>Beards or gilded walking sticks, multi-colored<\/p>\n<p>Prayer shawls or multi-faceted worship robes<\/p>\n<p>Do we become holy. Oh no \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Things superficial could never contain, retain things super.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>For holy am I<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are holy because<\/p>\n<p>He is holy, and He made us holy.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we forget it but that<\/p>\n<p>Only means that when we remember<\/p>\n<p>It we will appreciate it more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new movement: Removement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let us remove ourselves from everything mediocre, mundane<\/p>\n<p>Let us remove everything mediocre, mundane from the world<\/p>\n<p>So that everything unique, pure, holy can shine forth.<\/p>\n<p>A removement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is only one Holy of Holies<\/p>\n<p>But many holies, people wholly holy,<\/p>\n<p>Completely beyond the foolish, totally<\/p>\n<p>Deeper than the deepest cracks and holes,<\/p>\n<p>(Black holes, bullet holes, watering holes)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Holiness!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not the condescending<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHolier than thou\u201d insecurity,<\/p>\n<p>But the \u201cthou art holy\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simply because we come from<\/p>\n<p>And are connected to a holy place<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thou art holy so holy be:<\/p>\n<p>Thou art holy \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Not because thou art better<\/p>\n<p>But because thou art<\/p>\n<p>Drawn with holy paint<\/p>\n<p>And by a holy painter \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The Holy One<\/p>\n<p>Blessed Be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So holy be,<\/p>\n<p>Blessed be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not a suggestion (or a threat) \u2013<\/p>\n<p>A promise.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
