{"id":11667,"date":"2008-04-10T15:01:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-10T15:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/life\/other\/parshat_metzora_the_purist\/"},"modified":"2015-10-28T11:35:54","modified_gmt":"2015-10-28T16:35:54","slug":"parshat_metzora_the_purist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/arts-media\/parshat_metzora_the_purist\/","title":{"rendered":"Parshat Metzora: The Purist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As insensitive as it may sound,<\/p>\n<p>Sensitivity is not always synonymous<\/p>\n<p>With the human condition:<\/p>\n<p>We can very well hurt someone<\/p>\n<p>And remain immune to their pain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Everything is in effect \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cause \u2018n\u2019 effect:<\/p>\n<p>Nothing we do or don\u2019t<\/p>\n<p>Do is inconsequential.<\/p>\n<p>(Just because we aren\u2019t<\/p>\n<p>Always conscious of the<\/p>\n<p>Fact, doesn\u2019t mean the<\/p>\n<p>Fact isn\u2019t so)<\/p>\n<p>The only question is:<\/p>\n<p>Consequences<\/p>\n<p>Pure or impure?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We say the right thing,<\/p>\n<p>Write the right word,<\/p>\n<p>Help someone \u2013<\/p>\n<p>A pure consequence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The wrong thing, the<\/p>\n<p>Wrong word, hurt<\/p>\n<p>Someone \u2013 an impure<\/p>\n<p>Consequence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s as simple and painful<\/p>\n<p>As that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Purity is sensitive;<\/p>\n<p>Impurity, insensitive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It comes in many different shapes and sizes<\/p>\n<p>Does impurity:<\/p>\n<p>On bodies, clothes, homes.<\/p>\n<p>It can be a part of us; we can<\/p>\n<p>Dress up in it; we can live in it.<\/p>\n<p>But these shapes and sizes<\/p>\n<p>Only tell one angle of the story:<\/p>\n<p>You see, some impurities may be skin-deep \u2013<\/p>\n<p>This one isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We see facades, faces<\/p>\n<p>Results; but facades,<\/p>\n<p>Faces and results are<\/p>\n<p>Merely the painting<\/p>\n<p>Not the painter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We see a skin, an exterior blemished, but can we<\/p>\n<p>Even imagine the marks on the inside?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Purity comes in just one shape and size:<\/p>\n<p>The soul truth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>This shall be the law<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Of the metzora<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>On the day of his<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Purification<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We make mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we hurt the people<\/p>\n<p>That matter most, our brothers,<\/p>\n<p>Our sister; we hurt them with a<\/p>\n<p>Smirk, a condescending remark<\/p>\n<p>Or tone, an evil tongue twister,<\/p>\n<p>Twisting a truth into a lie,<\/p>\n<p>Twisting a pure thought into an<\/p>\n<p>Impure deed \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Twisting a heart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And we end up outside the camp,<\/p>\n<p>Alone, broken, fragmented into a million<\/p>\n<p>Little pieces, separated from our people<\/p>\n<p>From our selves, separated even from those<\/p>\n<p>Who are separated \u2013 we are so broken even<\/p>\n<p>The broken can\u2019t stand us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>The Kohen shall go<br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Outside of the camp\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But then the purist, the priest,<\/p>\n<p>Who sees not the impurities we\u2019ve<\/p>\n<p>Caused and effected, but the purity<\/p>\n<p>That can never be affected because it<\/p>\n<p>Was not effected; no \u2013<\/p>\n<p>We aren\u2019t an effect \u2013<\/p>\n<p>We are the cause.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes we forget that we are the cause<\/p>\n<p>That has to affect things in a pure way and it takes<\/p>\n<p>A purist, a priest to see, and help us see, the purity:<\/p>\n<p>For what is a purist if not someone who sees<\/p>\n<p>The purity in everything.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And what is a purist if not a pure someone who<\/p>\n<p>Helps others become purists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What is a purist if not someone willing to find the<\/p>\n<p>Purity even in the broken?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What is a purist if not someone sensitive \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Sensitive to another\u2019s pain<\/p>\n<p>Another\u2019s purity?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>Mendel Jacobson is a writer, poet and journalist living in Brooklyn.
