{"id":57746,"date":"2025-05-04T16:08:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-04T16:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/?p=57746"},"modified":"2025-09-18T19:27:30","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T19:27:30","slug":"from-mount-sinai-to-ancient-persia-the-link-between-shavuot-and-purim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/from-mount-sinai-to-ancient-persia-the-link-between-shavuot-and-purim\/","title":{"rendered":"From Mount Sinai to Ancient Persia: The Link Between Shavuot and Purim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many are familiar with the parallels between Purim and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/category\/yom-kippur\">Yom Kippur<\/a>, which have long been noted by both ancient sages and contemporary scholars alike. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lesser known, perhaps, is the connection between Purim and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/what-is-shavuos\/\">Shavuot<\/a>, and the links between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Matan Torah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 the giving of the Torah over 3,500 years ago \u2014 and the Jews of Persia, in the fourth century BCE.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Parashat Yitro, the Torah describes Bnei Yisrael standing at Har Sinai:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Vayityatzvu b\u2019tachtit hahar \u2013- they stood at the foot of the mountain.\u201d (Shmot 19:17).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rashi, noting the unusual phrasing, connects <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tachtit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tachat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; (meaning under, or beneath), suggesting that the nation quite literally stood beneath the mountain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How was this possible?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Gemara (Tractate Shabbat 88a) explains in the name of Rav Avidimi, that Hashem overturned the mountain and held it over Bnei Yisrael like a barrel (or coffin), and said, \u201cIf you accept the Torah, all will be good. Conversely, if you do not, this will be your burial site.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rabbi Yehuda Amital, zt\u201dl, the founding rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion, asks why it was necessary for Hashem to coerce Bnei Yisrael to accept the Torah; after all, they themselves had declared, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Naaseh, V\u2019Nishma \u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We shall do and we shall obey!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tosfot on Shabbat 88a explains that although Bnei Yisrael had already affirmed their commitment to following the Torah (Shmot 19:8),\u00a0 the actual experience of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Matan Torah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and everything it entailed \u2014 including thunder, lightning, smoke, and shofar blasts \u2014\u00a0 was so overwhelming, that it literally caused people\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">neshamot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (souls) to leave their bodies. Accordingly, people may have been so shaken by the experience that they may have been tempted to renege. Therefore, Hashem literally raised Har Sinai above them in order to ensure there would be no backpedaling.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Midrash Tanchuma <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Noach 3)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">posits that the nation\u2019s declaration of \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Naaseh V\u2019Nishma\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, can be divided into two separate concepts: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Naaseh \u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We will do\u201d, refers to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Torah Shebichtav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, (the Written Law) whereas \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">V\u2019Nishma \u2014 And We Will Obey\u201d,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> refers to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Torah Shebaal Peh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the Oral Law). At Har Sinai, while Bnei Yisrael agreed to abide by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Torah<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shebichtav<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, they were concerned about their ability to follow the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Torah Shebaal Peh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">intricate and complex <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">halachot <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(laws), and therefore requested to learn more about what it entailed. As such, Hashem coerced them to accept it by raising the mountain above their heads.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Gemara (Shabbat 88a) cites Rava, who observes that it was only in the days of Achashverosh that Bnei Yisrael voluntarily reaffirmed their commitment to the Torah. As it says in Megillat Esther (9:27), \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kimu V\u2019Kiblu HaYehudim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 the Jews upheld and accepted\u201d, indicating that they embraced the Torah and its mitzvot willingly, solidifying their earlier acceptance at Har Sinai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether or not the mountain was literally suspended above them, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zt\u201dl opines in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Covenant and Conversation Family Edition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that the nation really had no choice but to accept the Torah at Har Sinai, after having lived through the miracles of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yetziat Mitzrayim (<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Exodus from Egypt) receiving <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">manna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the sky, and extracting water from a rock. Conversely, their greatest test of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">emunah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (faith) occurred during the time of Megillah Esther, when Hashem\u2019s presence was hidden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That Jews remained Jews under such conditions was proof positive that they did indeed reaffirm the covenant,\u201d writes Rabbi Sacks. \u201cObstinate in their disbelief during much of the biblical era, they became obstinate in their belief ever afterwards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many are familiar with the parallels between Purim and Yom Kippur, which have long been noted by both ancient sages and contemporary scholars alike.
