As it is stated (Exodus 13:3), &#8220;<\/span><\/i><b><i>Remember this day <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you went out of Egypt&#8221;; just as it is stated (Exodus 20:8), &#8220;Remember the day of the Shabbat.&#8221;\u00a0 (<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rambam, Laws of Bread and Matzah 7:1)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maimonides\u2019s stature as a scholar, sage and intellectual luminary is without question. He remains the only sage to systematically<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">codify the entire corpus of Torah and Rabbinic law and his greatness as a philosopher and as a physician has cemented Maimonides as one the preeminent intellectual giants in the History of mankind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notwithstanding Maimonides\u2019s greatness, his opinion with regards to the Biblical source for the commandment of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sipur Yetziat Mitzrayim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the telling of the Exodus story is difficult to comprehend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost every other Medieval commentator sources the commandment for the telling of the Exodus story from the verse, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehegadata Lebincha <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you shall recount to your son<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Exodus 13:8, and for an apparently unknown reason, Maimonides selects a different verse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Maimonides chooses the verse of <\/span><b><i>zachor<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> et hayom hazeh-<\/span><\/i><b><i>remember <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this day <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the source for recounting the Exodus on Seder night.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remembering the Exodus is either an independent Biblical Commandment or part of an obligation to recite the Shema, and it is performed twice daily. Consequently, it is a little odd that the source for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sippur Yetziat Mitzrayim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would be<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> another verb of remembering.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maimonides then inexplicably presents the verse of <\/span><b><i>zachor<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> et yom hashabbat lekadsho <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><b><i>remember <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Sabbath to keep it holy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212; as a way of \u201cexplaining\u201d his selection of a verb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remembrance,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the source for the telling the Exodus story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e0\u05bc\u05b6\u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 (\u05e9\u05de\u05d5\u05ea \u05d9\u05d2 \u05d2) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d6\u05b8\u05db\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b0\u05e6\u05b8\u05d0\u05ea\u05b6\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05ea&#8221;.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remembering the Sabbath to keep it holy, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the source for Sanctifying the Sabbath day through the recitation of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiddush<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Friday night, and therefore it would seem to have absolutely no place in a discussion relating to Passover and the commandment of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sippur Yetziat Mitzrayim.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps Maimonides included the verse about Kiddush for Shabbat, because in it lies a clue as to his conceptualization of the Commandment to retell the story of the Exodus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerning the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitzvah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiddush<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Shabbat, Maimonides writes in his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sefer Hamitzvot (Aseh 155)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d4\u05d9\u05d0 \u05e9\u05e6\u05d5\u05e0\u05d5 \u05dc\u05e7\u05d3\u05e9 \u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05e9\u05d1\u05ea<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d5\u05dc\u05d0\u05de\u05e8 \u05d3\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd \u05d1\u05db\u05e0\u05d9\u05e1\u05ea\u05d5 \u05d5\u05d1\u05d9\u05e6\u05d9\u05d0\u05ea\u05d5<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d5\u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9 <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when Shabbat enters and when it leaves <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must mention the greatness and exalted character of this day <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and how it is distinct from the other days of the week\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As opposed to other Medieval commentators, Maimonides asserts that the Sabbath\u2019s closing ceremony of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">havdalah\/separation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is part of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitzvah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiddush <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and not a separate ritual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maimonides repeats this novel idea in his codification of Jewish Law in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hilchot Shabba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t 29:1<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d5\u05b7\u05ea \u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05c2\u05b5\u05d4 \u05de\u05b4\u05df \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05d3\u05bc\u05b5\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea Sabbath day in words\u2026 for it is written <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Remember to sanctify the Sabbath day.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One should remember it at its beginning and its conclusion\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by reciting the Kiddush when the Sabbath begins and the <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Havdalah<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it ends\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although one might think that the havdalah\/separation ritual is ancillary, and not an important part of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitzvah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiddush<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it appears from the aforementioned citations that<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Havdalah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> integral <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">component of the Commandment of Remembering the Sabbath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are commanded to make a verbal declaration\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when Shabbat enters and when it leaves.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One should remember it at its beginning and its conclusion\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by reciting the Kiddush when the Sabbath begins, and the <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Havdalah<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it ends.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since both citations contain no discernable difference between the directives for the beginning and the conclusion of Shabbat, it would seem that Shabbat\u2019s distinctive and separate nature is central to the Maimonidean conception of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remembering Shabbat.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Logically, the directive of Remembering the Sabbath Day should therefore be understood as <\/span><b>remember\/know that the Sabbath is different. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as light and dark are absolutely non-comparable, and just as sanctity and the mundane are poles apart, so too the Sabbath is completely unique in comparison to the six days of creation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the conceptualization of the verb of Remembering (the Sabbath) includes a cognizance of the Sabbath\u2019s unique and special character, then Maimonides\u2019s selection of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiddush<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a comparison to Seder night becomes clearer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Maimonides, the purpose and the focus of Seder would be to; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remember\/know that Seder Night is completely different from all other nights<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the year, G-d runs the world through intermediaries. Generally, G-d employs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angels, seraphim and messengers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as G-d hides, masks and obfuscates his existence. On a conventional day, G-d\u2019s presence is not apparently clear, and there is room for the doubter to question G-d\u2019s existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for one very special and unique moment in History, G-d emerged from \u201cbehind the curtain\u201d of nature with which he normally disguises himself, and displayed how he actively runs and controls the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05de\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05da\u05b0;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05db\u05b5\u05bc\u05d9\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05b8\u05dc \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05db\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d0\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5\u05be\u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d9\u05dd. \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05e3;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d5\u05bc\u05d1\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05dc\u05be\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b5\u05d9 \u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05e2\u05b1\u05e9\u05b6\u05c2\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05e4\u05b8\u05d8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd. \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b8\u05bc\u05c1\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05b7;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4&#8217;. \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b7\u05d7\u05b5\u05e8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>I, and not an angel.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;And I will smite every firstborn&#8221; \u2013 <\/span><\/i><b><i>I, and not a seraph<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with all the gods of Egypt, I will make judgments&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><b><i> I, and not a messenger.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b><i>&#8220;I am the Lord&#8221; &#8211; I am He, and there is no other<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zachor et hayom hazeh-Remember this day <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means that on Seder Night we are to focus on the unique aspects of the 15th of Nisan, the events which lead up to it, and to recognize G-d\u2019s unique providence on the first Seder Night, and every Seder Night for all of History.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A potential proof for this conceptualization of telling over the story of the Exodus is Maimonides\u2019s unique opinion with regards to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah Nishtanah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Four Questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maimonides writes that despite the fact that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leader of the Seder <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is obviously aware of the distinctive nature of the Seder, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leader<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201crepeats\u201d the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah Nishtanah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the four questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05de\u05b5\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e7\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b5\u05d0 \u05de\u05b7\u05d4 \u05e0\u05bc\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05de\u05b4\u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05df \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b7\u05d8\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05df \u05d0\u05b2\u05e4\u05b4\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc \u05e4\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05dd \u05d0\u05b7\u05d7\u05b7\u05ea \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9 \u05e4\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05db\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05df \u05d7\u05b8\u05de\u05b5\u05e5 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05b6\u05d4 \u05db\u05bc\u05bb\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05de\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And [then] the Leader says, &#8220;How is this night different from all [other] nights?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On all other nights we don&#8217;t dip even once; but tonight twice.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On all other nights we eat chametz and matzah; but tonight, it is all matsa\u2026\u201d &#8211; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hilchot Chametz u Matzah 8:2<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the Seder\u2019s Leader is cognizant of the differences in ritual on Seder night, then his recitation of the Mah Nishtanah must function not as a question of wonderment, but rather as a rhetorical statement-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cHow is this night different from all other night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s.\u201d When the Leader \u201casks\u201d the Four Questions he is effectively performing a \u201cquasi-Havdalah\u201d and affirming that the 15th of Nisan is completely different and separate from all other nights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the thesis that Seder Night is a function of the distinct character of the 15th of Nisan, explains Maimonides\u2019s opinion with regards to another key section of the Seder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maimonides, states that one has not fulfilled the Mitzvah of telling over the story of leaving Egypt unless one has explained the significance of consuming the Paschal Sacrifice, Matzah and Maror. (The Ramban disagrees and states that the need for explanation is in order to completely fulfill these three commandments.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05db\u05dc \u05de\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05dc\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d3\u05bc\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05dc\u05b5\u05d9\u05dc \u05d7\u05b2\u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05c2\u05b8\u05e8 \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b8\u05e6\u05b8\u05d0 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d3\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d7\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1\u05b8\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b5\u05df.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b6\u05e1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05de\u05b7\u05e6\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05e8\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8. \u05e4\u05bc\u05b6\u05e1\u05b7\u05d7 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05e9\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has not said these three things on the night of the fifteenth\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has not fulfilled his obligation (of sippur yetziat mitzrayim), and these are them:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Passover sacrifice; matsa; and marror&#8230;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And these things are called Haggadah (Recounting). &#8211; <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laws of Bread and Matzah 7:5<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implication of Maimonides\u2019s opinion means that if one related every Midrash about the Plague of Blood, every medieval commentary concerning the Plague of Frogs and every citation from the Zohar with regards to the rest of the Plagues, one has not fulfilled the directive of the telling over of the Passover story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it might seem counterintuitive that fulfillment of the Commandment is dependent on the recitation of a short paragraph, if the primary focus of Seder night is the uniqueness of the 15th of Nisan, then Maimonides\u2019s opinion logically flows. The three aforementioned Miztvot are unique to the Seder in that there is a directive to consume them<\/span><b> only<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the <\/span><b>first nigh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t of Passover, and because of that, they are inherently linked to the Seder Night experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it is not surprising that Maimonides omits the section of the Haggadah which speaks of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Splitting of the Red Sea<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which transpired on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7th of Passover<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If Seder\u2019s significance is based on the unique characteristics of the 1st day of Passover, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Remember this day)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then the events of the 7th day of Passover are not germane, and completely irrelevant to the Seder experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that we relate the events of the Exodus at the beginning of Passover and not at its conclusion seems to indicate that the Seder experience is (to paraphrase Winston Churchill), not the end, not the beginning of the end, but rather the end of the beginning of the process of becoming truly free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, Seder Night teaches us that the first step in the process of becoming a truly liberated person, is to remember and know that G-d actively runs and controls the world. In order to be able to counter the many yokes, anxieties and vicissitudes of conventional life, we need to feel safe and secure in Divine Providence. Seder Night with all its rituals broadcasts the message of:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b7\u05a3\u05e2\u05b7\u05df \u05ea\u05bc\u05b5\u05d3\u05b7\u0594\u05e2 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u059b\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05a5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u0596\u05d4 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e7\u05b6\u05a5\u05e8\u05b6\u05d1 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05bd\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That you may know that I, the LORD, am in the midst of the land.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exodus 8:18<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Maimonides states that on the night of the 15th of Nisan \u201ca person is obligated to<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">themselves as if they left Egypt<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">themselves as having left Egypt.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As magical and mystical as the 15th of Nisan is, Seder Night is clearly only the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commencement <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Passover and the start of a much longer process. Logically it would seem to be presumptuous to speak about truly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeing oneself<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as having completely left \u201chis personal Egypt\u201d at the onset of Passover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is axiomatic that G-d wants us to actualize our potential and become the great men and women that we are supposed to be. Seder Night, and the entire Holiday of Passover is a gift from G-d designed for us to break the bonds that prevent us from actualizing our G-d given potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember this day<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and showing ourselves as if we left Egypt-challenges us to retell the story of the Exodus and to look for moments when G-d\u2019s involvement in our life was openly apparent. W<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hen we can find and feel G-d\u2019s presence in our lives, and we begin to actualize our potential, then we can begin to understand that we are part of the story of Jewish destiny.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of Seder night then is to come to the realization,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cthat I am a character in our people\u2019s story, with my own chapter to write, and so are we all.
