Hundreds of years earlier, the prophet Zechariah faced a similarly hopeless situation.\u00a0 After Persia\u2019s conquest of Babylon, Cyrus the Great decreed that Jewish exiles there could return to Judah to rebuild the Temple.\u00a0 Only a small portion of the exiles did so; many intermarried.\u00a0 They built an altar, but local tribes prevented the reconstruction of the rest of the ruined Temple.\u00a0 Zechariah and his prophetic contemporaries sought to reignite the returnees\u2019 passion for God\u2019s presence, the Temple, and a prosperous commonwealth led by men sanctioned and inspired by God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">The Haftarah opens with Zechariah telling the people to rejoice, as God\u2019s presence is returning to Judah.\u00a0 Zechariah then has a vision about the High Priest, Joshua, who is described as a\u00a0 \u201cfirebrand plucked from the fire\u201d &#8211; a remnant of the First Temple\u2019s destruction. Joshua is cleansed of sin in a heavenly tribunal, then dressed as a purified High Priest; by following God&#8217;s righteous ways, he will worship, judge, and lead as a holy priest\u00a0 At the same time, God will bring forth a \u201cshoot\u201d (3:8) to govern Judah- Zerubbabel, a descendant of the penultimate Davidic king, Jechoniah.\u00a0 A mysterious seven-eyed stone cleanses the Land of sin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">Zechariah next envisions an expanded version of the Temple\u2019s Menorah.\u00a0 It is surrounded by two olive branches and has seven branches, each with seven lights.\u00a0 The two olive branches represent olive oil (4:12) to anoint and legitimate Judah\u2019s religious (Joshua) and governing (Zerubbabel) leaders who will bring a prosperous, righteous peace to the Land.\u00a0 The Haftarah concludes with a reassuring flourish: despite lacking military might, Zerubbabel will rebuild the Temple (where Joshua and priests will serve) by the divine Spirit and mountain-moving might God granted him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-center\"><strong>Haftarah Breakdown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Verses 2:14-17: God exhorts Zion to rejoice as He \u201cawakens\u201d to return to dwell once again in her midst, the \u201choly land\u201d of Judah.\u00a0 This will inspire other nations with faith in God, and silent awe among all humanity.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"sefaria-ref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Zechariah.2.15?lang=he-en&amp;utm_source=outorah.org&amp;utm_medium=sefaria_linker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ref=\"Zechariah 2:15\" aria-controls=\"sefaria-popup\">Zechariah 2:15<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord on that day, they shall become My people.\u00a0 I will dwell in your [Judah\u2019s] midst, and you will know that the Lord of hosts sent me [Zechariah] to you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-direction-rtl\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05d5\u05d5\u05bc\u05a9 \u05d2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d9\u05b4\u05a8\u05dd \u05e8\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05a4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc\u05be\u05d4&#8217; \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05a3\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05d4\u0594\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b8\u05a5\u05d9\u05d5\u05bc \u05dc\u05b4\u0596\u05d9 \u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u0591\u05dd \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05db\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9\u05db\u05b5\u0594\u05da\u05b0 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05b7\u0595\u05e2\u05b7\u05ea\u05bc\u05b0 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05be\u05d4&#8217; \u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d7\u05b7\u05a5\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b8\u05bd\u05d9\u05b4\u05da\u05b0\u05c3<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-justify\">Verses 3:1-5: In Zechariah\u2019s prophetic dream, a fiery remnant of the First Temple, Joshua the High Priest, is tried in a heavenly court. Zechariah prophesies that God will ensure that Zerubabel finishes building the Second Temple. It carries sufficient energy to supply the lamp as well as the tree on which the fruits of its supply ripen.\u00a0 Although the difficulties facing Zerubbabel mounted steadily, they were all destined to be solved.\u00a0 The spirit was the cornerstone to which the abundance of mercy would flow\u2026 This was the Third Chanukah, the third dedication of a Temple.\u00a0 It took place at winter\u2019s end, on the third of Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of the Persian king Darius.\u00a0 It was attended by those who had returned from exile under Zerubbabel and Joshua, inspired by the spirit of the prophets Haggai, and Zechariah, by the decree of the God of Israel\u2026 It was the dedication of the Galuth-Temple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-align-center\"><strong>Connections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maimonides considers\u00a0Zechariah\u2019s prophetic dreams to be representative of many prophetic experiences:<\/p>\n<p>Guide for the Perplexed, Part 2:43<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;similar to a man having a dream, imagining in that dream that he is awake, relating his dream to another person who explains its meaning to him &#8211; and it\u2019s all a dream.\u00a0 Some [other] dreams, one understands their matter [only] after awakening.\u00a0 Prophetic allegories are similar.\u00a0 Some are interpreted within the prophetic vision itself, as occurred with Zechariah.\u00a0 After [his] allegorical visions, Scripture states, &#8220;The angel speaking with me [Zechariah] returned and awakened me as a man awakened from his sleep.
