I don\u2019t know how I would have been able to find someone I couldn&#8217;t see or touch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With many degrees of separation the scenario of the \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hide and seek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d game with invisible participants is somewhat analogous to Abraham\u2019s discovery of a non-physical G-d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Abraham\u2019s discovery was further complicated because of the world\u2019s complete ignorance of G-d\u2019s existence. Maimonides describes the world\u2019s spiritual state at the time by stating:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05db\u05b5\u05d9\u05d5\u05b8\u05df \u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05e0\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05b7\u05d7 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05b5\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05b4\u05db\u05b0\u05d1\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0 \u05de\u05b4\u05e4\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05e7\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the lapse of time G-d was forgotten <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from all consciousness\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Hilchot Avodah zarah 1:2)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medrash<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bereshit Rabbah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 39:1 (BR39) seeks to explain the mechanism by which Abraham was able to find someone he could not see, and something he knew nothing about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While BR39 is not as well-known as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medrash<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where Abraham destroyed his father\u2019s idols and completely rejected the notion of a physical God, BR39 doesn\u2019t focus on what Abraham disregarded, but rather on the pathway through which he found G-d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BR39 quotes Rabbi Isaac who describes Abraham\u2019s search for G-d, as comparable to an individual who wanders from place to place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05e8\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05e7 <\/span>\u05de\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dc \u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1\u05b5\u05e8 \u05de\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05b8\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b8\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b7\u05d7\u05b7\u05ea \u05d3\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dc\u05b6\u05e7\u05b6\u05ea \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05e8 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b9\u05d0\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d6\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05de\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05d2 \u05d4\u05b5\u05e6\u05b4\u05d9\u05e5 \u05e2\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d0\u05b8\u05de\u05b7\u05e8 \u05dc\u05d5\u05b9, \u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d4\u05d5\u05bc\u05d0 \u05d1\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Rabbi Isaac, Abraham metaphorically saw the world as a beautiful palace\u00a0 with fires raging and asked, \u201cIs it possible that the palace does not have an owner<\/span>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To which G-d responded, and said to Abraham, \u201cI am the owner of the palace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brevity of the Medrash is surprising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Medrash can barely muster five lines to communicate the process of one of the greatest discoveries in the annals of human existence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, according to BR39, Abraham was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> moved to call out to G-d by simply seeing the world as an ordered and structured palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the concept <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that orderly creation implies a creator<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a compelling argument for the existence of G-d, the Medrash clearly indicates that the key factor behind Abraham\u2019s discovery of G-d, was the presence of both<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> order <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chaos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the fiery palace<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is it that the presence of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">order <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chaos <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">convince Abraham of G-d\u2019s existence, more than the existence of structured creation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, the answer is as follows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1948, leading British Astronomer, Sir Fred Hoyle helped develop the the Steady State Theory to explain the origins of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir Fred thought that the world had always existed and rejection the notion of a Creator. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoyle said that, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things are the way they are<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they were the way they were,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the world,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for whatever reason, always \u201cwas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraham, not knowing anything about G-d, probably considered this possibility that the world had always existed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraham, looked at the world and saw structure. He saw that a day is always 24 hours, and that seasons had definite beginnings and ends. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw consistency in the cycles of the moon and he saw the miracle of childbirth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returning to the words of BR39, Abraham saw the world as metaphorical palace, with order and precision. Consequently, he had to consider that the default position of the world is to order and that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hings are the way they are<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they were the way they were<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Abraham saw a world that can be chaotic. He saw hurricanes, sickness, and disease. Additionally, Abraham observed that \u201cmother nature\u201d could be unforgiving as\u00a0 the fires of chaos were raging in the palace of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Medrash, Abraham must have come to the conclusion that t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he Solid State Theory<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was incorrect, for if the world has always existed without guidance <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then the world could have only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one default position;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> either chaos or order<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f both order and chaos were the simultaneous default positions of the world, then the fires of chaos would eventually destroy the orderly world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, it logical to assume that once Abraham dismissed the Solid State Theory and the concept of a physical G-d, he arrived at another objective possibility. That there must be a non-physical G-d Who created order, built the metaphorical palace and, for some unknown reason, allows the fires of destruction to exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraham metaphorically calls out to G-d and says \u201cI know You, the Creator, are here. I see this beautiful world, with detail and structure, please put out the fires of chaos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon hearing\u2019s Abraham\u2019s plaintive appeal, G-d ended his period of silence and responded to Abraham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BR39\u2019s brevity, its presentation Abraham\u2019s process for finding G-d, allows for the presentation of complex philosophical ideas in the form of a story that a six-year-old can comprehend on his or her level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While BR39 has meaning and importance throughout the year, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medrash\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conclusion has special relevance for Rosh Hashanah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the conclusion of BR39, G-d doesn\u2019t seem to answer Abraham\u2019s question: \u201cW<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hy don\u2019t you put out the fire and make the world completely ordered?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, G-d addresses this question by saying that Abraham and the Jewish people will be charged with the mission of extinguishing the fires of chaos and fixing the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that G-d is telling us that if there is disease, then we should train religious doctors to heal the sick, and if buildings collapse, then we should develop rapid response teams to find the injured and to comfort those who are bereaved<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps we are the ones who have to bring order to chaos, because when G-d was openly present in the world, His presence overwhelmed mankind. When G-d \u201cwalked in the Garden of Eden,\u201d Adam and Eve hid, and after G-d revealed Himself at Mt. Sinai, the Jewish people constructed a golden calf. It appears for this world to function, then G-d has to remain hidden, and consequently it falls upon Abraham\u2019s children to heal the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Rosh Hashanah, when we stand in front of G-d as individuals and as a community, the question will be asked whether we are fulfilling this mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have we used our talents and our gifts to bring light to the world? Are we fulfilling our potential to bring order and godliness to the world? Is the world a better place because we are here?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-doubt is oftentimes a normal response to such weighty questions. Most of us have an inside voice that says that a mission of bringing order and light to the world is too daunting a task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, Moses\u2019s initial response to his mission of leading of leading the Jewish people was\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05de\u05b4\u05a3\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u0594\u05db\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05a5\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b5\u0596\u05da\u05b0 \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc\u05be\u05e4\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05e2\u05b9\u0591\u05d4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exodus 3:11)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the task is helping to perfect G-d\u2019s world is daunting, when the shofar is blown on Rosh Hashanah, the perception for many is that nothing is beyond our reach. Oftentimes, when we hear the notes of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tekiah<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shevarim <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teruah<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the impossible becomes possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, when we hear the sounds of the shofar, please G-d we will be moved to action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tekiah <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; we will try to make ourselves and our communities better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shevarim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; we will try to extinguish the flames of chaos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teruah &#8211;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we will try to bring G-d\u2019s light to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tekiah Gedolah <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; this is the year that we will bring order to the world, complete the last page of Jewish history and bring mashiach.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a child I fondly remember playing the game \u201chide and seek\u201d.
