Tefilah Focus Special Elul Series \u2013 Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Special Elul Series 5782 \u2013 Part 3\u00a0\u2013 13 Midos 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>sefer Tomer Devorah<\/em>\u00a0uses the 13\u00a0<em>midos<\/em>\u00a0mentioned in\u00a0<em>Michah<\/em>\u00a07:18 rather than the ones we recite from\u00a0<em>Sh\u2019mos<\/em>\u00a034:6.\u00a0 We will note both versions for each\u00a0<em>midah<\/em>.\u00a0 Our purpose in these segments is twofold:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong><em>Objective 1<\/em>:<\/strong>\u00a0To understand as best as we can the\u00a0<em>midah<\/em>\u00a0of Hashem being described, so that we can put forth the necessary efforts to emulate each\u00a0<em>midah<\/em>.\u00a0 Our efforts are a fulfillment of the great\u00a0<em>mitzvah<\/em>\u00a0of \u201c\u05d5\u05d4\u05dc\u05db\u05ea \u05d1\u05d3\u05e8\u05db\u05d9\u05d5\u2013<em>V\u2019halachta bi\u2019drachav<\/em>\u00a0(and go in His ways)\u201d [<em>D\u2019varim<\/em>\u00a028:9] and enable us to climb towards achieving\u00a0<em>d\u2019veikus<\/em>, the ultimate connection to Hashem.\u00a0 These efforts will also generate the mercy and forgiveness promised by Hashem to Moshe Rabbeinu when Hashem Himself showed Moshe Rabbeinu how to evoke His mercy and forgiveness for\u00a0<em>B\u2019nei Yisrael<\/em>.\u00a0 When we are merciful to others, Hashem will be merciful to us.\u00a0 When we are forgiving of others, Hashem will be forgiving of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong><em>Objective 2:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0To understand on a very basic level what we are saying when we recite the 13\u00a0<em>Midos<\/em>, especially during\u00a0<em>S\u2019lichos<\/em>\u00a0and on Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0<em>Objective 1<\/em>, we will primarily present from the\u00a0<em>sefer Matnas Chaim<\/em>\u00a0on\u00a0<em>Tomer Devorah<\/em>, written by HaRav Matisyahu Salomon, and from the\u00a0<em>shiurim<\/em>\u00a0presented by HaRav Mordechai Finkelman (available on TorahAnytime).\u00a0 For\u00a0<em>Objective 2<\/em>, we will primarily utilize a sheet available in Hebrew and English from Irgun Harbatzas HaTorah (732-363-0879), as well as the\u00a0<em>shiurim<\/em>\u00a0from HaRav Mordechai Finkelman.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*****<\/p>\n<p><strong>MIDAH 1<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Hashem<\/em>* \/ \u05de\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b5-\u05dc \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05da\u05b8\u2013<em>Mi Keil kamocha<\/em>\u00a0(Who is a G-d like You?)**<\/p>\n<p>*in\u00a0<em>D\u2019varim<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 **in\u00a0<em>Michah<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Objective 1:<\/em>\u00a0Hashem grants us a vast multitude of gifts.\u00a0 These can include gifts such as every breath of life, a healthy mind, ability to speak, ability to see, to hear, to smell, to feel, and to walk.\u00a0 We surely could fill many volumes of books listing the plethora of gifts that Hashem bestows upon us.<\/p>\n<p>When one utilizes one or more of these gifts in a way that directly violates the wishes of his Benefactor, that is a great insult and disgrace to Him.\u00a0 Imagine if we bought someone an expensive gift to enjoy, and he decides to use that gift to harm us or our children! \u00a0Who could tolerate such an affront and despicable act? \u00a0The answer is that Hashem can and does.\u00a0 As an example, many times we take His tremendous gift of speech and use it to harm and hurt His other children.\u00a0 Hashem tolerates that and does not punish us immediately.\u00a0 He could easily remove our ability to speak before we cause harm or hurt.<\/p>\n<p><em>Objective 2:<\/em>\u00a0The\u00a0<em>\u201cHashem\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>Midos<\/em>\u00a0we recite means\u00a0<em>before<\/em>\u00a0we sin.\u00a0 Hashem knows when we are about to use His precious gift against Him and His children, but He does not remove His gift.\u00a0 Not only does He continue to bestow the gift we are using against Him, but He also continues to bestow all His other gifts to us, as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>Our task:<\/em>\u00a0We must learn to emulate Hashem\u2019s\u00a0<em>midah<\/em>.\u00a0 Even when others wish to harm us, we should strive to not withhold any goodness we have been doing for them until now.\u00a0 We may certainly speak to them and ask why they would want to hurt us, and we may protect ourselves.\u00a0 After that, we should be tolerant and wait for them to apologize.\u00a0 While we are waiting for that, we should strive not to withhold any past favors we may have done for them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MIDAH 2:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Hashem<\/em>* \/ \u05e0\u05b9\u05e9\u05c2\u05b5\u05d0 \u05e2\u05b8\u05d5\u05ba\u05df\u2013<em>nosei avon<\/em>\u00a0(Who pardons iniquity)**<\/p>\n<p><em>Objective 1:<\/em>\u00a0When we sin, we create a prosecuting angel.\u00a0 That\u00a0<em>mal\u2019ach<\/em>\u00a0needs to be \u201csustained.\u201d\u00a0 Ordinarily, it would come to us to sustain itself, thereby destroying us.\u00a0 However, Hashem, in His great mercy, not only waits patiently for us to return to Him, not only continues to provide us with all His goodness and kindness, but in addition, He Himself sustains this\u00a0<em>mal\u2019ach<\/em>\u00a0to allow us to have the time to return to Him.\u00a0 When we do return and perform the requirements of\u00a0<em>t\u2019shuvah<\/em>, then He destroys that angel.<\/p>\n<p><em>Objectives 1 and 2:<\/em>\u00a0The use of the same Name of Hashem indicates that even after our sin, once we have returned to Hashem through\u00a0<em>t\u2019shuvah<\/em>, Hashem restores us to our previous relationship.\u00a0 He is the same Hashem to us after the sin as He was before the sin.\u00a0 In fact, the relationship is even stronger after\u00a0<em>t\u2019shuvah<\/em>\u00a0than it was prior to the sin.<\/p>\n<p>That will generally not be the case in a human relationship, where one has deeply hurt another and apologized.\u00a0 In that case, the hurt person may forgive the one who caused the hurt, but the relationship will usually not be the same as it was.<\/p>\n<p><em>Our task:<\/em>\u00a0First, from\u00a0<em>\u201cnosei avon\u201d<\/em>\u00a0we learn that after we have been hurt, while waiting for others to apologize to us, even though the hurt continues, and the harm they may have caused continues, we should continue to bestow any past goodness we were accustomed to providing until they \u201creturn to us,\u201d apologizing for their behavior towards us.<\/p>\n<p>Second, from the second\u00a0<em>\u201cHashem\u201d<\/em>\u00a0we learn that after the one who caused the hurt sincerely apologizes and rectifies any harm caused, we should strive to restore the relationship just as it was prior to the hurt and harm that they caused us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MIDAH 3:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Keil<\/em>* \/ \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b9\u05d1\u05b5\u05e8 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05e4\u05bc\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05e2\u2013<em>v\u2019oveir al pesha<\/em>\u00a0(and overlooks transgression)**<\/p>\n<p><em>Objective 1:<\/em>\u00a0Hashem Himself cleans up our\u00a0<em>aveiros<\/em>.\u00a0 Who is willing and stands ready to clean up a very messy, dirty diaper of a young child? \u00a0Only a compassionate mother and father are willing and ready to do so.<\/p>\n<p><em>Objective 2:<\/em>\u00a0<em>Keil<\/em>\u00a0denotes powerful compassion.\u00a0 It is an even higher level than the compassion expressed in the first two\u00a0<em>midos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Our task:<\/em>\u00a0Emulate Hashem\u2019s\u00a0<em>midah<\/em>\u00a0of powerful compassion, where He personally (not through a\u00a0<em>mal\u2019ach<\/em>) washes away our messy, dirty\u00a0<em>aveiros<\/em>.\u00a0 When someone hurts us and has apologized and has made amends (<em>t\u2019shuvah<\/em>), not only should we forgive him, but we should seek to clean up his mess.\u00a0 One powerful way of doing this is to ask Hashem in our\u00a0<em>tefilos<\/em>\u00a0to inspire the offender to do complete\u00a0<em>t\u2019shuvah<\/em>\u00a0so that he can reinstate his relationship with Hashem, as well.\u00a0 Here, we not only tolerate and forgive, but we become an advocate for the person, helping him to clean up the mess he made.<\/p>\n<p>Emulating Hashem\u2019s\u00a0<em>midos<\/em>\u00a0is a very tall order and a lifetime of effort and toil.\u00a0 HaRav Chaim Friedlander writes that, as with other areas of\u00a0<em>avodas Hashem<\/em>, this takes much time and effort.\u00a0 Every bit of effort we expend to think about others and work towards emulating Hashem\u2019s\u00a0<em>midos<\/em>\u00a0will bring us to a closer connection to Hashem, thereby evoking Hashem\u2019s mercy for all of\u00a0<em>B\u2019nei Yisrael<\/em>\u00a0and for ourselves and loved ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0There is an excellent
