written in His Torah: \u201cYou are to know this day and take to your heart that Hashem is the only G-d\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that \u201c<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d4&#8217; \u05d4\u05d5\u05d0 \u05d4\u05d0\u05dc\u05d5\u05e7\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>\u2013<em>Hashem Hu HaElokim<\/em>(Hashem is the only G-d)\u201d must be as \u201cclear as day\u201d to us; we must perceive it with total clarity.\u00a0 Yet, we are still told that after \u201c<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d5\u05d9\u05d3\u05e2\u05ea<\/span>\u2013<em>v\u2019yadata<\/em>\u00a0(you are to know)\u201d we still need \u201c<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d5\u05d4\u05e9\u05d1\u05ea<\/span>\u2013<em>va\u2019hasheivosa<\/em>&#8230; (and take [to your heart]).\u201d\u00a0 It is not enough to know intellectually.\u00a0 We are obligated to review it again and again so that we \u201cplace it on our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to truly know?<\/p>\n<p>HaRav Yechiel Perr, the Rosh HaYeshiva of the Yeshiva of Far Rockaway, related that he once visited a Holocaust survivor in Canada who had escaped a particular concentration camp known for no successful escapees.\u00a0 Rav Perr asked him a question.\u00a0 Though I don\u2019t recall the entire question, the question began with \u201cHow did you know?\u201d\u00a0 The survivor responded rhetorically, \u201cWhat does it mean to \u2018know\u2019?\u00a0 Let me tell you what it means to \u2018know.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He proceeded to relate how he had put his life at risk to enter the Vatican to speak with a high-ranking bishop about what was going on, in order to try to get them to take action and save thousands of lives.\u00a0 Someone managed to sneak him in and arrange a meeting with this senior official.\u00a0 As he related what he had experienced and seen, the bishop kept repeating, \u201cOh, so terrible,\u201d but it seemed that the message was not hitting home.\u00a0 The survivor then told the bishop that he had seen someone dressed exactly like he was, with the same bishop\u2019s garb, etc.\u00a0 He then related how he had witnessed that man being burned alive in his garb.\u00a0 This time, the bishop fainted.\u00a0 He was revived and fainted again.\u00a0 Eventually, many lives were saved as a result of this meeting.<\/p>\n<p>In the first few attempts to get the message across to the bishop, the bishop heard the factual information being related to him, but he did not yet really \u201cknow\u201d what was happening inside the camps.\u00a0 It was outside of him.\u00a0 An intellectual response of \u201cOh, so terrible\u201d was the result.\u00a0 When he envisioned himself being burned alive, then he \u201cknew.\u201d\u00a0 That is \u201cknowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the knowledge that\u00a0<em>Hashem Hu HaElokim<\/em>\u00a0affects the way we live our lives and how we make our decisions, that is when we truly \u201cknow.\u201d\u00a0 In order to get to that point, we must constantly contemplate and learn about\u00a0<em>emunah<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>bitachon<\/em>.\u00a0 The key question is: Do we actually live our lives with \u201c<em>Hashem Hu HaElokim<\/em>\u201d?\u00a0 [HaRav Chaim Friedlander,\u00a0<em>Sifsei Chaim<\/em>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<em>Moadim<\/em>\u00a01, in the name of HaRav Yisrael Salanter]<\/p>\n<p>Let us take advantage of the great opportunity given to us to recite\u00a0<em>Aleinu<\/em>\u00a0three times a day, and to say it with heart and emotion, to work on really \u201cknowing\u201d that<em>Hashem Hu HaElokim<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>FOOTNOTE<\/p>\n<p>HaRav Herschel Welcher (<em>Mara d\u2019Asra<\/em>\u00a0of Congregation Ahavas Yisroel of Kew Gardens Hills, NY), in a\u00a0<em>shiur<\/em>\u00a0he delivered, illustrated his understanding of the phrase \u201c<em>Hashem Hu HaElokim<\/em>,\u201d based on a\u00a0<em>S\u2019forno<\/em>.\u00a0 He tries to think about one event each week where he experienced and felt the \u201cHand of Hashem\u201d in his personal life.\u00a0 He thinks about that event before\u00a0<em>Kiddush<\/em>\u00a0on Friday evening, contemplating that Hashem, Who created the world (\u201c<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d6\u05db\u05e8\u05d5\u05df \u05dc\u05de\u05e2\u05e9\u05d4 \u05d1\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9\u05d9\u05ea<\/span>\u2013<em>zikaron l\u2019maasei B\u2019reishis<\/em>\u201d), is the same Hashem Who took us out of Mitzrayim (<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d6\u05db\u05e8 \u05dc\u05d9\u05e6\u05d9\u05d0\u05ea \u05de\u05e6\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>\u2013<em>zeicher liY\u2019tzias Mitzrayim<\/em>) \u2013 both mentioned in the Friday night\u00a0<em>Kiddush<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 demonstrating His complete control, involvement, and mastery over every aspect of the Universe and, therefore, over our individual and communal lives.\u00a0 This Hashem Who is described this way in the\u00a0<em>Kiddush<\/em>\u00a0is the same Hashem Whose Hand was felt by HaRav Welcher in whatever he experienced that week.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"RTL\">&#8230;\u05d1\u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05de\u05e2\u05dc \u05d5\u05e2\u05dc \u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e5 \u05de\u05ea\u05d7\u05ea, \u05d0\u05d9\u05df \u05e2\u05d5\u05d3<\/span><br \/>\n\u2026in heaven above and on the earth below, there is none other.<\/strong><br \/>\n*****<\/p>\n<p>The word\u00a0<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05e2\u05d5\u05dc\u05dd<\/span>\u2013<em>olam<\/em>\u00a0stems from the word\u00a0<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05e0\u05e2\u05dc\u05dd<\/span>\u2013<em>ne\u2019elam\u00a0<\/em>(hidden).\u00a0 Hashem hides from us, and our job is to find Him \u2013 everywhere.\u00a0 Everything that happens in the world only happens through the will of Hashem, though to us that fact is hidden, and it appears as if we and others are the cause of events.\u00a0 When it comes to current events, we are too often caught up in the minutiae of \u201canalysts,\u201d \u201cexperts,\u201d and news reporters.\u00a0 We want to know the minute details of how something happened, why it happened, who was the hero, etc.\u00a0 We get so enwrapped that we actually start to believe that it was the brilliance of an individual or might of a country that was the cause of some great success (or failure).\u00a0 Needless to say, their\u00a0<em>efforts<\/em>\u00a0warrant our thanks, praise, and admiration.\u00a0 Certainly we are obligated to thank people for their\u00a0<em>efforts<\/em>.\u00a0 They may have made the choice to sacrifice their money, time, and even lives for others.\u00a0 However, we must remember at all times that the results are controlled and directed by Hashem exclusively.\u00a0 Getting too absorbed in the nitty-gritty may reflect a lack of this all-important understanding.\u00a0 When we avoid getting too caught up in how the messengers succeeded and instead focus on thanking and praising Hashem, we will be increasing\u00a0<em>k\u2019vod Shamayim<\/em>\u00a0in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true in our personal daily lives.\u00a0 Whether we learn or teach Torah, work, raise families, or are engaged in any of our other many daily activities, we must remember that\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0results are up to Hashem.\u00a0 Our role is desire and effort, which certainly includes\u00a0<em>tefilah<\/em>.\u00a0 Brilliance, wealth, power, etc. are gifts from Hashem.\u00a0 They are not the cause of any success, and are not to be admired, praised, or marveled at (see\u00a0<em>Yirmeyahu<\/em>\u00a09:22-23).\u00a0 Getting too absorbed in someone being an\u00a0<em>ilui<\/em>\u00a0in learning, or a\u00a0<em>g\u2019vir<\/em>\u00a0in wealth, demonstrates a lack of understanding of\u00a0<em>\u201cein od<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HaRav Chaim Volozhin, in his\u00a0<em>sefer Nefesh HaChaim<\/em>3:12, states:<\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d5\u05d1\u05d0\u05de\u05ea \u05d4\u05d5\u05d0 \u05e2\u05e0\u05d9\u05df \u05d2\u05d3\u05d5\u05dc \u05d5\u05e1\u05d2\u05d5\u05dc\u05d4 \u05e0\u05e4\u05dc\u05d0\u05d4, \u05dc\u05d4\u05e1\u05e8 \u05d5\u05dc\u05d1\u05d8\u05dc \u05de\u05e2\u05dc\u05d9\u05d5 \u05db\u05dc \u05d3\u05d9\u05e0\u05d9\u05df \u05d5\u05e8\u05e6\u05d5\u05e0\u05d5\u05ea \u05d0\u05d7\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd, \u05e9\u05dc\u05d0 \u05d9\u05d5\u05db\u05dc\u05d5 \u05dc\u05e9\u05dc\u05d5\u05d8 \u05d1\u05d5 \u05d5\u05dc\u05d0 \u05d9\u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 \u05e9\u05d5\u05dd \u05e8\u05d5\u05e9\u05dd \u05db\u05dc\u05dc. \u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 \u05db\u05dc\u05dc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[<em>Free and abridged translation:]<\/em>\u00a0And really it is of major importance and is a wondrous\u00a0<em>s\u2019gulah<\/em>, to remove and nullify from his psyche all foreign influences, so that they not rule over him and have any influence upon him.\u00a0 When a person establishes in his heart that, \u201cAfter all, Hashem is the true G-d, and there is none other [<em>ein od<\/em>] anywhere,\u201d and he attributes no power or will in the world that has ultimate influence on his life other than Hashem, the singular Master of the world, so will Hashem help him to be free of those negative influences so that they will not be able to control his life.<\/p>\n<p>The words \u201c<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d0\u05d9\u05df \u05e2\u05d5\u05d3 [\u05de\u05dc\u05d1\u05d3\u05d5]<\/span>\u2013<em>Ein od [milvado]<\/em>\u201d are especially important to remember when we know that we will have a significant challenge later that day.\u00a0 This can be a dentist appointment to remove a difficult wisdom tooth, a doctor appointment we are nervous about, an important job interview, a crucial meeting with our boss or our best and most difficult client, etc.\u00a0 Repeating \u201c<span dir=\"RTL\">\u05d0\u05d9\u05df \u05e2\u05d5\u05d3 \u05de\u05dc\u05d1\u05d3\u05d5<\/span>\u2013<em>Ein od milvado<\/em>\u201d before and during (when possible) these events will help remind us that the outcome is exclusively determined by Hashem.\u00a0 It also brings reward for\u00a0<em>bitachon<\/em>, which Rabbeinu Yonah (<em>Mishlei<\/em>\u00a03:6) says is \u201cgreat beyond the heavens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What a powerful lesson to remember as we leave our<em>tefilos<\/em>\u00a0and go back out into the world.\u00a0
