in the Kodesh HaKadoshim &#8211; part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/standing-in-the-kodesh-hakadoshim-part-1\/\"><strong>Part 1<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although <em>Aleinu<\/em> was composed by Yehoshua bin Nun, and the <em>Anshei K\u2019neses HaG\u2019dolah<\/em> instituted its inclusion in the <em>Malchiyus<\/em> section of <em>tefilas Musaf<\/em> on Rosh HaShanah, it was Rabban Yochanan ben Zakai who instituted saying it daily after each <em>tefilah<\/em>.\u00a0 He did this to strengthen the <em>emunah<\/em> and spirits of <em>klal Yisrael<\/em>, who were living through the painful times of the destruction of the second <em>Beis HaMikdash<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Both the first paragraph and the second paragraph of <em>Aleinu<\/em> begin with the letter <em>ayin<\/em> and end with the letter <em>daled<\/em>, alluding to the idea of testimony, bearing witness, as the <em>ayin<\/em> and <em>daled<\/em> form the word \u05e2\u05d3\u2013<em>eid<\/em> (witness).\u00a0 This symbolizes our unique position, obligation, and privilege of being the chosen ones to testify about Hashem\u2019s active <em>hashgachah<\/em> in the world.\u00a0 We immediately begin with referring to Hashem as \u201c\u05d0\u05d3\u05d5\u05df \u05d4\u05db\u05dc\u2013<em>Adon Ha\u2019kol<\/em> (the Master of all)\u201d to emphasize this crucial point that differentiates us from the rest of the nations.\u00a0 They may agree that Hashem is \u201c\u05d9\u05d5\u05e6\u05e8 \u05d1\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9\u05d9\u05ea\u2013<em>Yotzeir b\u2019reishis<\/em> (the Molder of primeval creation)\u201d \u2013 the creator of the world.\u00a0 However, they believe that this was the end of His involvement.\u00a0 In <em>Tehilim<\/em>, David HaMelech writes: \u201c\u05e8\u05dd \u05e2\u05dc \u05db\u05dc \u05d2\u05d5\u05d9\u05dd \u05d4&#8217;, \u05e2\u05dc \u05d4\u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05db\u05d1\u05d5\u05d3\u05d5\u2013<em>Ram al kol goyim Hashem, al ha\u2019shamayim k\u2019vodo<\/em>\u201d \u2013 i.e., to the nations, Hashem is way up there and it is below His dignity to involve Himself with this world down here.\u00a0 We, on the other hand, know and proclaim that Hashem is <em>Adon Ha\u2019kol<\/em> \u2013 Master and Ruler over all of creation, up in <em>shamayim<\/em> and down here as well.\u00a0 This is the meaning of \u201c\u05dc\u05ea\u05ea \u05d2\u05d3\u05d5\u05dc\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d9\u05d5\u05e6\u05e8 \u05d1\u05e8\u05d0\u05e9\u05d9\u05ea\u2013<em>laseis g\u2019dulah l\u2019Yotzeir b\u2019reishis<\/em>\u201d: We \u201cadd <em>g\u2019dulah<\/em>\u201d to the nations\u2019 limited belief, so to speak, by recognizing and proclaiming that Hashem is <em>Adon Ha\u2019kol<\/em>.\u00a0 [HaRav Chaim Friedlander, <em>Sifsei Chaim<\/em> \u2013 <em>Moadim<\/em> 1]<\/p>\n<p>Next, we thank Hashem for not making us like the \u201cnations of the lands\u201d \u2013 \u201c\u05e9\u05dc\u05d0 \u05e2\u05e9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05db\u05d2\u05d5\u05d9\u05d9 \u05d4\u05d0\u05e8\u05e6\u05d5\u05ea\u2013<em>she\u2019lo asanu k\u2019goyei ha\u2019aratzos<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 The nations are bound to their lands, and when they have been driven out of their lands, they have faded away.\u00a0 We, on the other hand, are privileged in that our existence is not dependent on our land in the same way.\u00a0 While Eretz Yisrael is certainly very important to us in many ways, we have had to exist, and do exist, independent from our homeland.\u00a0 In fact, as if to stress this point, we actually began as a nation in the desert before we entered Eretz Yisrael.\u00a0 We also unfortunately were without our homeland for close to 2,000 years, and yet we survived and have not faded away.\u00a0 Our existence is solely dependent on our learning the Torah and performing <em>mitzvos<\/em>, representing our doing the Will of Hashem and \u201cattaching\u201d ourselves to Him.<\/p>\n<p>We also thank Hashem that \u201c\u05dc\u05d0 \u05e9\u05de\u05e0\u05d5 \u05db\u05de\u05e9\u05e4\u05d7\u05d5\u05ea \u05d4\u05d0\u05d3\u05de\u05d4\u2013<em>lo samanu k\u2019mishp\u2019chos ha\u2019adamah<\/em>\u201d \u2013 for not establishing us as the families of the earth.\u00a0 The earth represents nature.\u00a0 The essence of the nations is their connection to \u201cmother nature\u201d and physicality.\u00a0 Our essence, on the other hand, is our connection to Hashem and His Torah, to the spiritual and the eternal.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakai will be achieved if we recite <em>Aleinu<\/em> with <em>kavanah<\/em> and reflect upon it and allow it to affect us, as we head to our next destination.\u00a0 As we prepare daily to head back out \u201cinto the world\u201d after <em>tefilah<\/em>, let us solidify and strengthen our <em>emunah<\/em> in <em>Adon Ha\u2019kol<\/em> and raise our hope and expectation of our future <em>g\u2019ulah<\/em>, may it be soon in our days, <em>b\u2019ezras Hashem<\/em>, where all the world will recognize that Hashem is One.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u05e9\u05dc\u05d0 \u05e9\u05dd \u05d7\u05dc\u05e7\u05e0\u05d5 \u05db\u05d4\u05dd, \u05d5\u05d2\u05d5\u05e8\u05dc\u05e0\u05d5 \u05db\u05db\u05dc \u05d4\u05de\u05d5\u05e0\u05dd<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nFor He has not assigned our portion like theirs, nor our lot like all their multitudes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*****<br \/>\nEvery person and every nation has a portion (\u05d7\u05dc\u05e7\u2013<em>cheilek<\/em>) and a designated objective (\u05ea\u05e4\u05e7\u05d9\u05d3\u2013<em>tafkid<\/em>) in the revelation of Hashem\u2019s honor.\u00a0 In general, the other nations\u2019 <em>cheilek<\/em> is to support and assist <em>klal Yisrael<\/em> (though today we do not see how they actually support us) in our <em>tafkid<\/em>.\u00a0 However, we are more privileged to have a more direct service of Hashem through learning and fulfillment of the Torah.<\/p>\n<p><em>Goral<\/em> (\u05d2\u05d5\u05e8\u05dc) represents the tools that Hashem provides us with, so that we can perform our <em>tafkid<\/em>.\u00a0 Each of us has a unique <em>tafkid<\/em>, and each of us is given exactly what we need when we need it, to fulfill that <em>tafkid<\/em>.\u00a0 [HaRav Chaim Friedlander, <em>Sifsei Chaim<\/em> \u2013 <em>Moadim<\/em> 1]<\/p>\n<p>Today, when we do not have prophets to tell us precisely what our <em>tafkid<\/em> is, the Vilna Gaon says that our <em>tafkid<\/em> is to focus on learning, to fulfill the Torah and <em>mitzvos<\/em>, and to do Hashem\u2019s will to the best of our understanding.\u00a0 HaRav Shlomo Wolbe [<em>Alei Shur<\/em>] explains that the Gaon is not saying that we don\u2019t have an individual <em>tafkid<\/em> today, but rather that we do not have <em>n\u2019viim<\/em> or <em>ruach ha\u2019kodesh<\/em> to determine what that <em>tafkid<\/em> is on our own.\u00a0 However, if we learn Torah and perform <em>mitzvos<\/em> with purity of heart to understand and perform the true will of Hashem, then the Torah will guide us to our <em>tafkid<\/em>.\u00a0 This requires many years of toil, learning Torah and performing <em>mitzvos<\/em> properly, coupled with a lot of work to remove our personal desires and biases from clouding our judgment.\u00a0 Our ultimate goal must be to uncover and perform the <em>ratzon<\/em> of Hashem and not to gratify ourselves personally.<\/p>\n<p>If we are thinking, <em>Why isn\u2019t Hashem giving me that million-dollar deal so I can give all that <\/em>tz\u2019dakah<em> that I want to give<\/em>, perhaps that is not yet our <em>tafkid<\/em> at the present moment.\u00a0 We are required to do our part as mentioned above and learn to trust that Hashem will do His.<\/p>\n<p>Recapping the essence of <em>Aleinu<\/em> up to this point: We are praising Hashem, Who not only created the Universe but Who is also the Master over all, and Who watches over us with <em>hashgachah pratis<\/em>.\u00a0 We are also expressing our understanding of how privileged we are to have been chosen collectively as Hashem\u2019s nation, having the honor of serving Hashem more directly than all the other nations of the world.\u00a0 We are similarly privileged on an individual level to serve Hashem more directly than individuals from other nations.\u00a0 These privileges should cause us to feel great joy over our good fortune to have been created as members of <em>klal Yisrael<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/standing-in-the-kodesh-hakadoshim-part-3\/\"><strong>Part 3<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Part 1 Although Aleinu was
