We are now within the Three Weeks period prior to Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av.\u00a0 May we see the salvation before this Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

HaRav Yisrael Salant zt\u201dl<\/span><\/em> stated that we can elevate ourselves spiritually on Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av at least as much as we can on Yom Kippur.\u00a0 What did he mean, and what can we do in the coming days to reach that point of spiritual elevation, should we have to sit on the floor for yet another Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av, we need to have reached the point where we can sit on the floor and cry (with tears or in our hearts) over the loss that occurred almost 2,000 years ago.\u00a0 Which loss? \u00a0The ultimate loss.\u00a0 We refer to the loss of the extreme and palpable closeness to Hashem that we experienced when we had the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 We came to the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em> periodically with the mindset of attaining greater awareness and fear\/awe of Hashem.\u00a0 These visits would provide spiritual fuel until our next visit.\u00a0 The degree of our desire and yearning to feel the presence of Hashem was the determining factor in the degree to which we actually felt the closeness of Hashem.\u00a0 We witnessed daily miracles in the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em>, and it was the place on Earth where our potential for connection with Hashem was greatest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The challenge is that we never experienced that closeness, so we can\u2019t know what we lost.\u00a0 We can only imagine, based on what Chazal<\/span><\/em> tell us.\u00a0 Most of us struggle with that and are far from the tzadikim<\/span><\/em> who can imagine it vividly.\u00a0 So where does that leave the rest of us?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The world stands on three pillars: Torah<\/span><\/em>, Avodah<\/span><\/em>, and Chesed<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 Today, our \u201cavodah<\/span><\/em>\u201d is tefilah<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 Let us examine two halachos<\/span><\/em> of tefilah<\/span><\/em> to derive the level of closeness that is possible during our Shemoneh Esrei<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 First, one may not pass within six-to-eight feet in front of someone davening<\/span><\/em> Shemoneh Esrei<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 This is because, as we daven<\/span><\/em> Shemoneh Esrei<\/span><\/em>, we are standing directly before the Sh\u2019chinah<\/span><\/em> (meaning our connection with Hashem), and that person would be breaking our connection.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second halachah<\/span><\/em> is that before every Shemoneh Esrei<\/span><\/em>, we are instructed to imagine that we are traveling to Eretz Yisrael, grabbing a taxi to Yerushalayim, entering the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em>, and then entering into the Kodesh HaKodashim<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 That is where we are standing while we are in our Shemoneh Esrei<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 It is from that holiest place on Earth that our tefilos<\/span><\/em>, along with the tefilos<\/span><\/em> of every other person who is davening<\/span><\/em>, rise up to Shamayim<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These two halachos<\/span><\/em> should infuse us with a sense of awe and an awareness of the great gift and opportunity we have each and every day, though it is but a taste of what we had.\u00a0 We should recognize that our awareness and closeness today is vastly distant from what we had when we could actually enter the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em> (in the parts of the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em> where we were allowed to enter).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can we do in these Three Weeks to prepare ourselves to mourn the loss of the extreme degree of closeness to Hashem that we once experienced, and to set ourselves up for the spiritual elevation on Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av that is akin to Yom Kippur, which will come about through our intense desire and yearning for that closeness to Hashem that we lost? \u00a0How can we reach that state of intense yearning and desire to the point that we can cry about it on Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One avodah<\/span><\/em> we can work on is mindfully observing the two halachos<\/span><\/em> mentioned, and to think about what they mean.\u00a0 Mourn and cry internally over the fact that we may not feel even the closeness that is available to us, and over the fact that we can\u2019t even imagine what once was.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another avodah<\/span><\/em> that we can embark upon is a special focus on those parts of tefilah<\/span><\/em> that are directly related to preparing for Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av.\u00a0 Some examples include the two brachos<\/span><\/em> immediately preceding Shema Koleinu<\/span><\/em> and the one after it, the second paragraph of Aleinu<\/span><\/em>, and \u201cAmein, Y\u2019hei Sh\u2019mei Rabba.\u201d<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 Towards that end, we are making some of these tefilah<\/span><\/em> segments available this week, next Sunday, and the Thursday prior to Tish\u2019ah B\u2019Av.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u05e6\u05b4\u05d9\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05df, \u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05c1\u05b0\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05d8 \u05ea\u05bc\u05b4\u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05d3\u05b6\u05d4; \u05d5\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05d1\u05b6\u05d9\u05d4\u05b8, \u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d3\u05b8\u05e7\u05b8\u05d4 [\u05d9\u05e9\u05e2\u05d9\u05d4 \u05d0:\u05db\u05d6<\/span>]<\/span><\/p>\n

Tzion shall be redeemed with justice,<\/span><\/p>\n

Bringing the Mashiach Closer \u2013 Part 1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u05d5\u05dc\u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05e9\u05dc\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05d9\u05e8\u05da \u05d1\u05e8\u05d7\u05de\u05d9\u05dd \u05ea\u05e9\u05d5\u05d1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And to Jerusalem, Your city, may You return in compassion<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before we begin to discuss the specifics of Yerushalayim and our request to see it rebuilt in all its beauty with the Sh\u2019chinah<\/span><\/em> residing in the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em>, allow us to digress, to address some fundamental questions about our tefilos<\/span><\/em> for the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em>, our ultimate redemption, may it be soon in our days.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, if the tefilos<\/span><\/em> of the generations of the Tana\u2019im<\/span><\/em>, Amora\u2019im<\/span><\/em>, G\u2019onim<\/span><\/em>, Rishonim<\/span><\/em>, and Acharonim<\/span><\/em> \u2013 all previous to us \u2013 were insufficient to bring the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em>, why would we think our t\u2019filos<\/span><\/em> can possibly be effective?\u00a0 Second, do we really believe that our<\/span><\/strong> tefilos<\/span><\/em> can bring the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em>?\u00a0 Third, we have been asking for the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em> for almost 2,000 years unsuccessfully.\u00a0 Am I really accomplishing anything by each day continuously repeating that same request, day after day?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer is \u201cYes, we are\u201d \u2013 we are accomplishing something for ourselves, for the klal<\/span><\/em>, and in fact we are hastening the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u05db\u05dc \u05d7\u05db\u05dd \u05de\u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d0\u05dc \u05e9\u05d9\u05e9 \u05d1\u05d5 \u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 \u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d0\u05de\u05ea\u05d5, \u05d5\u05de\u05ea\u05d0\u05e0\u05d7 \u05e2\u05dc \u05db\u05d1\u05d5\u05d3\u05d5 \u05e9\u05dc \u05d4\u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9 \u05d1\u05e8\u05d5\u05da \u05d4\u05d5\u05d0 \u05d5\u05e2\u05dc \u05db\u05d1\u05d5\u05d3\u05df \u05e9\u05dc \u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d0\u05dc \u05db\u05dc \u05d9\u05de\u05d9\u05d5, \u05d5\u05de\u05ea\u05d0\u05d5\u05d4 \u05d5\u05de\u05e6\u05e8 \u05dc\u05db\u05d1\u05d5\u05d3 \u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05e9\u05dc\u05d9\u05dd \u05d5\u05dc\u05db\u05d1\u05d5\u05d3 \u05d1\u05d9\u05ea \u05d4\u05de\u05e7\u05d3\u05e9 \u05d5\u05dc\u05d9\u05e9\u05d5\u05e2\u05d4 \u05e9\u05ea\u05e6\u05de\u05d7 \u05d1\u05e7\u05e8\u05d5\u05d1 \u05d5\u05dc\u05db\u05e0\u05d5\u05e1 \u05d2\u05dc\u05d5\u05d9\u05d5\u05ea, \u05d6\u05d5\u05db\u05d4 \u05dc\u05e8\u05d5\u05d7 \u05d4\u05e7\u05d3\u05e9 \u05d1\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d5\u05db\u05d5’ [\u05ea\u05e0\u05d0 \u05d3\u05d1\u05d9 \u05d0\u05dc\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5 \u05e8\u05d1\u05d4, \u05d4\u05d5\u05d1\u05d0 \u05d1\u05de\u05e1\u05d9\u05dc\u05ea \u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd \u05e4’ \u05d9<\/span>“\u05d8<\/span>]<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery chacham<\/span><\/em> in Yisrael who possesses the words of Torah according to their true significance, and grieves for the honor of Hashem and for the honor of Yisrael all his days, and desires and feels pain for the honor of Yerushalayim and of the Beis HaMikdash<\/span><\/em> and for the swift flowering of salvation and the ingathering of the exiles, attains to the infusion of the Divine spirit [ruach ha\u2019kodesh<\/span><\/em>] in his words\u2026\u201d [Tana D\u2019Vei Eliyahu Rabbah<\/span><\/em>, perek<\/span><\/em> 4, quoted by M\u2019silas Y\u2019sharim,<\/span><\/em> perek<\/span><\/em> 19]<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The M\u2019silas Y\u2019sharim<\/span><\/em> (in perek<\/span><\/em> 19) tells us that one should constantly daven<\/span><\/em> for the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em> and the return of k\u2019vod Shamayim<\/span><\/em> to the highest level.\u00a0 He continues: \u201c\u2026and if one will ask, \u2018Who am I to daven<\/span><\/em> for the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em>?\u00a0 Is my<\/span><\/strong> tefilah<\/span><\/em> really going to bring the redemption?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 The Ramchal [Rav Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, 1707-1746, author of M\u2019silas Y\u2019sharim<\/span><\/em>]\u00a0 then brings the Gemara in Sanhedrin<\/span><\/em> (37a), which states that man was created alone, as an individual, so that each person should say: \u201cBishvili nivra ha\u2019olam<\/span><\/em>\u201d (for me the world was created).\u00a0 M\u2019silas Y\u2019sharim<\/span><\/em> concludes:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u05d5\u05db\u05d1\u05e8 \u05e0\u05d7\u05ea \u05e8\u05d5\u05d7 \u05d4\u05d5\u05d0 \u05dc\u05e4\u05e0\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d9\u05ea\u05d1\u05e8\u05da \u05e9\u05d9\u05d4\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05d5 \u05de\u05d1\u05e7\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05d5\u05de\u05ea\u05e4\u05dc\u05dc\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05dc \u05d6\u05d0\u05ea, \u05d5\u05d0\u05e3 \u05e9\u05dc\u05d0 \u05ea\u05e2\u05e9\u05d4 \u05d1\u05e7\u05e9\u05ea\u05dd \u05de\u05e4\u05e0\u05d9 \u05e9\u05dc\u05d0 \u05d4\u05d2\u05d9\u05e2 \u05d4\u05d6\u05de\u05df \u05d0\u05d5 \u05de\u05d0\u05d9\u05d6\u05d4 \u05d8\u05e2\u05dd \u05e9\u05d9\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4, \u05d4\u05e0\u05d4 \u05d4\u05dd \u05e2\u05e9\u05d5 \u05d0\u05ea \u05e9\u05dc\u05d4\u05dd \u05d5\u05d4\u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9 \u05d1\u05e8\u05d5\u05da \u05d4\u05d5\u05d0 \u05e9\u05de\u05d7 \u05d1\u05d6\u05d4<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is Hashem\u2019s pleasure that his children desire and pray for this.\u00a0 And though their desire may not be fulfilled because the proper time has not yet arrived or for some other reason, they will have done their part and Hashem rejoices in it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mabit (Rav Moshe ben Yosef miTrani, 16th century), amongst others, explains that our tefilos<\/span><\/em> combine with those of all the previous generations before us.\u00a0 They laid the foundation and did the bulk of the work.\u00a0 We need only finish the job.\u00a0 It is all of our tefilos<\/span><\/em> joining together through the generations that will merit to bring the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em> soon in our days.\u00a0 He also says that one who is mispalel<\/span><\/em> for the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em> and k\u2019vod Shamayim<\/span><\/em> will receive \u201c<\/span>\u05e9\u05db\u05e8 \u05d2\u05d3\u05d5\u05dc \u05d1\u05dc\u05d9 \u05e1\u05e4\u05e7<\/span>\u2013sachar gadol b\u2019li safeik<\/span><\/em>\u201d despite the fact that he has not been affirmatively answered as of this moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

We see how valued and important our heartfelt tefilos<\/span><\/em> for the g\u2019ulah<\/span><\/em> and the increase in revelation of k\u2019vod Shamayim<\/span><\/em> truly are.<\/span><\/p>\n
