Shelled nuts that list BHA or BHT (preservatives) in the ingredients require special Passover certification. Please note that regarding peanuts different communities have different customs. Some consider them to be\u00a0<em>kitniyot<\/em>; while others eat peanuts on Passover. Pecans are only acceptable with special Passover certification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> What coffees are acceptable for Passover?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>All regular ground<\/strong> <strong>unflavored non-decaffeinated<\/strong> <strong>coffees<\/strong> are acceptable for Passover use when bearing an OU.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Decaffeinated coffee<\/strong>: Coffee is often decaffeinated by means of ethyl acetate, which is derived from\u00a0\u00a0 either <em>kitniyot<\/em> or <em>chametz<\/em>. Therefore, decaffeinated coffees are not acceptable for Passover unless specifically marked for Passover or found in either our Passover Guide or on <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/\">oupassover.org<\/a> under the heading of products certified for year round use and Passover.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instant coffees<\/strong>\u00a0often contain maltodextrin, which is derived from either from corn (<em>kitniyot<\/em>) or wheat (<em>chametz<\/em>). Therefore, all instant coffees require special Passover certification unless explicitly mentioned in our Passover Guide or on <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/\">oupassover.org<\/a> under the heading of products certified for year-round use and Passover.<\/p>\n<p><strong>K-cups <\/strong>&#8211; Unflavored, not decaffeinated only. The OU symbol often appears on the box and not on the individual cup. Please refer to page 63 of the OU Passover Guide for a listing of brands or utilize OU Kosher\u2019s product search feature at <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/\">oupassover.org<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><u>Use of Nutritional and Dietary Supplements on Passover for Infants and the Infirm:<\/u><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Q<sub>1<\/sub><\/strong>: Which baby formula can I use for my infant on Passover?<\/p>\n<p>A: Most infant formulas are made from soy products which are <em>kitniyot<\/em>. Since <em>kitniyot<\/em> does not apply to infants most formulas may be used on Passover.\u00a0 For a list of acceptable formulas please visit: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/baby-products\/\">http:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/baby-formula\/<\/a> or see page 100 of the OU Passover Guide.\u00a0 Please note that care should be taken to keep bottles, nipples and formula away from the general kitchen area. Any mixing or washing should be done elsewhere, such as in the bathroom sink.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong><sub>: <\/sub>Which supplements are acceptable for the infirm?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many of the products contain\u00a0<em>kitniyot<\/em>, some as the primary ingredient.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the products may contain minor ingredients that are possibly, though unlikely, produced from\u00a0<em>chametz<\/em>-based raw materials. All such ingredients are used at a less than 1:60 ratio.<\/li>\n<li>Liquid versions of these products are preferable to their powdered counterparts.<\/li>\n<li>Products that contain flavors should only be provided when no unflavored alternative exists.<\/li>\n<li>Products should be purchased before Passover and be maintained segregated from Kosher for Passover foods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A list of medical nutritional supplements identified by the OU as acceptable for use on Passover can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/medicine-guidlines\/nutritionals-and-dietary-supplements\/\">https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/medicine-guidlines\/nutritionals-and-dietary-supplements\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><u>Fruit &amp; Vegetables<\/u><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Fresh<\/strong> \u2013 These are acceptable without Passover certification.\u00a0 The coating on these items is neither <em>chametz<\/em> nor <em>kitniyot.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Frozen Vegetables<\/strong> \u2013 These are washed in water that often contains anti-foaming agents, which are not appropriate for Passover use. Moreover, some companies also pack pasta products on shared packing machinery. Therefore, frozen vegetables require Passover certification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frozen Fruit<\/strong> &#8211; The issues noted above as relevant to frozen vegetables are not a concern at facilities that process frozen fruit, which does not require Passover certification.\u00a0One must be careful though, that no additives e.g. corn syrup are used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dried Fruit<\/strong> &#8211; These are usually treated with oils derived from <em>kitniyot<\/em> and therefore require special Passover certification.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Other Items<\/span>:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Is bottled water acceptable for use without Passover certification?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong>\u00a0 All\u00a0<em>unflavored\u00a0<\/em>bottled water, seltzer and sparkling water <em><u>without added minerals<\/u><\/em> is Kosher for Passover, even without any Kosher supervision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Do canned products such as salmon and potatoes require Passover certification?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Are eggs acceptable for use without Passover certification?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whole eggs in their shell may be used without special Passover certification.\u00a0 Egg whites and pasteurized eggs are available with an OU-P. Please refer page 81 of the OU Passover Guide or to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/food-items\/eggs\/\">https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/food-items\/eggs\/<\/a>\u00a0 for a complete list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Is almond or soy milk acceptable for Passover?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Almond and soy milk may be problematic and are not recommended for use on Passover. If a situation arises and it is needed by an infant or an infirmed person please see pages 100 &amp; 101 of our guide or at <em>https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/food-items\/almond-milk\/<\/em> &amp; <em>https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/food-items\/soy-milk\/<\/em> respectively<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> What should I feed my pet?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Ashkenazim have a custom not to eat <em>kitniyot<\/em>. However they may benefit from and own <em>kitniyot <\/em>(M.B. 453:10). It should be noted that it is forbidden, even during the year, to feed any mixture of milk and meat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> May I use frozen fish without Passover certification?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Due to the frequent application of glazes to raw fish, it should be purchased only with reliable <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/what-is-kosher\/\">kosher certification.<\/a> However, Kirkland Frozen Wild Salmon bearing the standard OU symbol is acceptable after rinsing, while the Kirkland Atlantic (Farm Raised) Salmon bearing the standard OU symbol is acceptable as is for Passover.\u00a0 Kirkland\u2019s Frozen Tilapia when bearing the standard OU symbol is also acceptable for Passover after rinsing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Are chia seeds, flaxseed and teff considered <em>kitniyot<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Chia seeds are not considered <em>kitniyot,<\/em> but may require special checking.<\/p>\n<p>Flaxseed and teff are considered <em>kitniyot<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Can I buy Lactaid for Passover?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Lactaid production is likely to involve <em>chametz<\/em>. This renders chewable lactaid tablets problematic.<br \/>\nHowever, our Rabbinical authorities have decided that lactaid milk is permissible if purchased before Passover since any <em>chametz<\/em> contained within Lactaid milk would be nullified (<em>batel<\/em>). The OU certifies a number of lactose reduced products for Passover.
