{"id":31042,"date":"2012-12-10T17:18:48","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T17:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/?p=31042"},"modified":"2020-09-08T12:35:08","modified_gmt":"2020-09-08T12:35:08","slug":"dreidels-and-daily-miracles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/dreidels-and-daily-miracles\/","title":{"rendered":"Dreidels and Daily Miracles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><em>\u2026ve\u2019al nisecha sh\u2019bechol yom imanu\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>\u2026for all Your miracles we receive each day\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211; from the Shemone Esrei<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What does it take to experience a miracle?\u00a0 Nothing more than to live a life with eyes wide open.\u00a0\u00a0 The truth is, we live in an age of miracles and wonder. \u00a0Does that sound like a ridiculous statement to you \u2013 to characterize the age of the Internet, gene therapy, and biological science as an age of miracles?\u00a0 For many people, the idea of \u201cmiracles\u201d comes straight from the Medieval Age.\u00a0 They view miracles as fantasy and \u201canti-science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet, I assure you that Judaism has the greatest regard for science.\u00a0 Science and miracles both true?\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 As Tamar Sofer wrote in a recent blog, \u201cMy husband, a laser physicist, tells me that scientists who study particle physics are more likely to become religious. Scientists are notoriously hard to convince of anything. Yet, when these skeptical scientists see the perfect, natural order of the world, they decide nano and up, that this world was planned. The marvelous design before them becomes the miracle they need to become convinced.\u201d\u00a0 Indeed, it is quite often those scientists who study natural law in its greatest complexity and detail who appreciate miracles the most.<\/p>\n<p>The laws of science and nature guide our world.\u00a0 <em>And<\/em> miracles happen all the time.\u00a0 A contradiction?\u00a0 Not at all.\u00a0 The \u201crub\u201d, as Hamlet might have suggested, is with how we define a \u201cmiracle\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31062 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0018-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0018-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0018-550x366.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0018.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A miracle is anything that \u201cshould not\u201d happen in the logical, rational normal course of events.\u00a0 A miracle need not be fantastical.\u00a0 If we limit the things that constitute \u201cmiracles\u201d to the \u201cearth standing still\u201d or events that run contrary to physical law, then we not only tarnish the laws that God has established for the physical world but we blind ourselves to the very real miracles that play out in our lives everyday.<\/p>\n<p>Over three hundred years ago King Louis XIV of France asked Pascal, the great philosopher of his day, to give him proof of the existence of miracles. \u00a0Without hesitation, Pascal answered, &#8220;Why, the Jews, your Majesty.\u00a0 The Jews.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>History does not tell us the king\u2019s reaction to this proof, but we do know exactly what Pascal meant by his answer because he explained it clearly in his masterwork, <em>Pensees<\/em>.\u00a0 In that work, he states that the fact that the Jewish people had survived even to his day was proof enough for him that miracles occur.\u00a0 After all, what rational explanation existed to make sense of our continued presence upon the world\u2019s stage?<\/p>\n<p>A more modern historian, Arnold Toynbee, wrote a ten-volume encyclopedia of human history.\u00a0 In the course of those many volumes the one thing that contradicted his \u201cuniversal\u201d rules that govern the inexorable decline of every people on earth was the continued flourishing of the Jewish people<\/p>\n<p>Only the Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Despite history\u2019s the brutal attempts to destroy us, we have managed to defy all predictions and logical expectation of our demise.<\/p>\n<p>Miraculous.<\/p>\n<p>History is littered with the powerful empires that worked mightily to ensure our demise \u2013 from the Akkadians to the Babylonians to the Persians to the Third Reich.\u00a0 Jewish history \u2013 indeed, Jewish <em>existence <\/em>\u2013 defies rational explanation. \u00a0<em>We <\/em>are a miracle.<\/p>\n<p>The miraculous is so essential to who we are that David Ben Gurion, the first Prime Minister of the State of Israel, said, &#8220;A Jew who does not believe in miracles is not a realist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">* * *<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31063 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0022-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0022-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0022-550x366.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0022.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The most dramatic threats to our existence have come from external forces; the more subtle and damaging arise from within the Jewish community.\u00a0 Jews too often embrace cultural norms that would diminish the uniqueness of Jewish life, as when we clamored to assimilate into Hellenistic culture during the early years of the Hellenistic Empire.\u00a0 It was only the \u201cmiracle\u201d of Chanukah \u2013 and by that I mean a good deal more than the oil lasting a full eight days \u2013 that once again allowed us to survive as a dedicated people.<\/p>\n<p>During the time of Antiochus, our prayer and repentance were not sincere. \u00a0The people had assimilated.\u00a0 They were \u201cas the Greeks\u201d and so, in the beginning it was a mere handful of Hasmoneans leading the charge while most of our people failed to demonstrate the inspiration from below to earn God\u2019s abundant blessing from above.<\/p>\n<p>And yet God showered us with miracles. \u00a0Despite the people\u2019s lack of faith, He provided us, mercifully, with inspiration from above.\u00a0 His inspiration was undeserved \u2013 which made it all the more miraculous!<\/p>\n<p>And so, the specific miracles arrived and we emerged victorious victors; we re-dedicated the grand Temple and lit a miraculously burning oil.<\/p>\n<p>On Chanukah we spin dreidels upon which are inscribed the first letters of the words, &#8220;<em>neis gadol ha&#8217;yah sham<\/em>&#8221; \u2013 a great miracle happened there. \u00a0(In Israel the letters on the dreidels spell out \u201c<em>neis gadol ha\u2019yah po<\/em>\u201d \u2013 a great miracle happened <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">here<\/span>!)<em>\u00a0 <\/em>We rejoice with our dreidels, but we spin them specifically from their top part to constantly remind ourselves that Chanukah was a time when miracles came undeserved from God, when the Almighty bestowed His infinite compassion upon His people and things began to spin down to us in the form of undeniable miracles.<\/p>\n<p>How surprising that the dreidel, silly top, should carry such weight \u2013 not only a theological truth and a statement about the role of the Jewish people in the miracle of Chanukah but also insight and knowledge into powerful historical dynamics.\u00a0 The Kabbalah, the compendium of Jewish mystical teachings, teaches us another aspect of the dreidel. \u00a0In this understanding, the four letters do not represent a statement about God\u2019s presence in the world \u2013 a great miracle happened there\/here \u2013 but rather they each represent one of four different historical empires \u2013 Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman \u2013 that tried to destroy the Jewish people.<\/p>\n<p>Four empires the likes of which the world had never seen.\u00a0 And the Jewish people?\u00a0 A relatively puny gathering of people dedicated to study and the performance of God\u2019s command.\u00a0 Is it any wonder that, when given the opportunity, we seek to assimilate and become part of these \u201cgreat\u201d cultures and empires?\u00a0 But something always holds us back.\u00a0 Internally and externally, we are <em>different<\/em>.\u00a0 We are \u201clike\u201d but not the same.<\/p>\n<p>So, against this backdrop of world history, are we simply spinning haphazardly from one tragedy to another?\u00a0 Or might there be some <em>reason <\/em>and meaning behind all the events that have punctuated our history?<\/p>\n<p>Our miraculous victory at Hanukah teaches us little about military strategy and everything about ourselves and the world, but about God as well.<\/p>\n<p>Without God, there are no miracles.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me to our modest little dreidel.\u00a0 In its modesty, it teaches us a great deal about God.\u00a0 Just as the dreidel spins around a central point and topples when it begins to lose its connection to that point, so too do we begin to \u201close our footing\u201d when we begin to lose our connection to our center, to God.<\/p>\n<p>The dreidel teaches us about our own psychologies.\u00a0 We are only \u201cwhole\u201d when all the aspects of our being \u2013 body, mind, soul\u2026 <em>hakol<\/em> \u2013 are balanced and blended.\u00a0 When the dreidel spins, who can distinguish between each of the individual sides?\u00a0 No one!\u00a0 As we spin in perfect balance, on our central point, we are balanced and whole.<\/p>\n<p>Spin, spin, spin.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0050.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31065 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0050-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0050-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0050-550x824.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0050.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we face times of hardship and tragedy, the dreidel teaches us first and foremost that God is our God and we are His people.\u00a0 And if we believe in that ultimate meaning of the Jewish people; if we <em>know<\/em> that despite the dizzying blur of events in our history there is some purpose to the challenges we face, and if we are prepared <em>to fight<\/em> to remain Jews regardless of what history throws at us, then who knows \u2013 we might just experience a miracle and be reassured that there is a hidden hand guiding the destiny of the Jewish people.<\/p>\n<p>And yet\u2026 and yet\u2026 this sense of miracle is so mighty as to cause us to overlook the small miracles, the delightful miracles, that occur each and every day.\u00a0 Which brings us, once again, to the simple and fun little dreidel.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Twain blogs that, just like our little dreidel, miracles \u201c\u2026come in different and various sizes, some large and some small, but they are still miracles. Consequently, a miracle is not only some unexplained, supernatural circumstance. They could actually originate from you and me.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you think that any miracle can happen when you decide to finally volunteer your time to the local library?\u00a0 Be kinder or nicer to your spouse? Give some money to the beggar and spend some more quality time with your beloved children?\u00a0 Visit an elderly and lonely neighbor? How about giving a warm smile to a stranger?\u00a0 A miracle can also occur whenever a person hears his call of her or his life, pays attention to and acts on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My growing, personal collection of dreidels not only keeps my sense of wonder and delight fresh and young but is a constant reminder of the small miracles of life.\u00a0 Every day, I see God\u2019s miracles \u2013 in a mother\u2019s kiss, a grandmother\u2019s doting smile, a father\u2019s proud expression.\u00a0 I see a community caring for itself and for others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31066 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org:443\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0026-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0026-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0026-550x366.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/IMG_0026.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The world is filled with miracles great and small and, as Tamar Sofer suggests, \u201cyou do not have to be a particle physicist to see miracles.\u201d\u00a0 Not at all.\u00a0\u00a0 Miracles are part of the Jewish world and experience.\u00a0 From Sinai and the splitting of the Red Sea, miracles are part of our national history.\u00a0 Our \u201c\u2026national memory helps Jews believe in miracles, and develop a stronger relationship with God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so we spin, spin, spin delightfully in the world, aware of the miracles large and small which give our lives meaning, none greater than that God has reached out to us and made us His special people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does it take to experience a miracle?
