{"id":28202,"date":"2006-06-30T01:22:00","date_gmt":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/holidays\/months\/brief_explanation_of_the_thirteen_attributes\/"},"modified":"2017-08-28T12:53:08","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T12:53:08","slug":"brief_explanation_of_the_thirteen_attributes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/brief_explanation_of_the_thirteen_attributes\/","title":{"rendered":"Brief Explanation of the &#8220;Thirteen Attributes&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brief Explanation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy<br \/>\n(based on ArtScroll Siddur)<\/p>\n<p>The enumeration and explanation of the Attributes follows the generally accepted opinion of Rabbeinu Tam, as found in Rosh HaShanah (17b).<\/p>\n<p><em>(Note: The first two Attributes are based on the two-fold occurrence of the &#8220;Name,&#8221; &#8220;Hashem.&#8221; &#8220;Hashem&#8221; is really not in itself a Name of G-d; rather, it simply means &#8220;The Name.&#8221; It is used here in place of a particular One of G-d\u2019s Names because we are not permitted to articulate, or even to write, that Name, except for in the Torah scroll itself)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hashem.<\/strong> This Name denotes mercy. G-d is merciful before a person sins, even though He knows the evil lies dormant in the person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hashem.<\/strong> G-d is merciful after the sinner has gone astray.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E-L.<\/strong> This Name denotes power. G-d\u2019s mercy sometimes surpasses even the degree indicated by the name Hashem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachum.<\/strong> Compassionate; G-d eases the punishment of the guilty, and He does not put people into extreme temptation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ve-Chanun.<\/strong> And Gracious; even to the undeserving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erech Apayim.<\/strong> Slow to Anger; so that the sinner can reconsider long before it is too late. (Rav Moshe Cordovero in &#8220;Tomer Devorah,&#8221; describes G-d as a &#8220;Melech Ne\u2019Elav,&#8221; an &#8220;Insulted King,&#8221; Whose subjects disobey Him, yet He maintains their existence.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ve-Rav Chessed\u2026<\/strong> And Abundant in Kindness\u2026; towards those who lack personal merits.
