{"id":28193,"date":"2006-06-30T01:31:01","date_gmt":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/production.ou.org\/holidays\/months\/the_sin_of_the_golden_calf_and_forgiveness\/"},"modified":"2016-08-12T10:27:53","modified_gmt":"2016-08-12T10:27:53","slug":"the_sin_of_the_golden_calf_and_forgiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/the_sin_of_the_golden_calf_and_forgiveness\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sin of The Golden Calf and Forgiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-266x266 size-266x266 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/Forgiveness-768x512.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/Forgiveness-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/Forgiveness-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/Forgiveness-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/holidays\/files\/Forgiveness.jpg 1600w\" alt=\"Forgive\" width=\"266\" height=\"177\" \/>When the Jewish People sinned by worshipping the Golden Calf (Shemot 32:1-6) right after receiving the Torah from G-d, in effect rejecting His great gift, Moshe broke the first set of Holy Tablets, on which were inscribed the Ten Commandments.<\/p>\n<p>Moshe then ascended Mount Sinai and pleaded with G-d for mercy and forgiveness on behalf of the Jewish people.<\/p>\n<p>G-d accepted Moshe&#8217;s pleas and commanded him to make another set of two tablets like the first.<\/p>\n<p>Moshe ascended the mountain again on Rosh Chodesh Elul (first day of the month of Elul) and remained there 40 days until the 10th of Tishrei.<\/p>\n<p>On the 10th of Tishrei, better known as Yom Kippur, he brought down the second set of holy Tablets which was granted to the Jewish people as a sign of renewed Divine favor.<\/p>\n<p>These 40 days were set for all future generations as days of repentance and forgiveness.
