He is the author of A Guide to the Complex: Contemporary Halakhic Debates\, a National Jewish Book Award winner\, and Ethics of Our Fighters: A Jewish View on War and Morality. A graduate of Harvard College and a former rebbe at Yeshivat Hakotel\, he received rabbinic ordination from the Israeli Chief Rabbinate\, an MA in Jewish philosophy at the Hebrew University\, and his PhD from Bar Ilan University Law School. \nBassie (Beth)Taubes is a nurse with over 30 years of clinical experience in oncology and a passionate advocate for community health and wellness. She serves as the Director of Community Outreach for Ematai\, an organization that blends Jewish wisdom with clinical expertise to guide individuals and families through complex healthcare decisions\, including aging\, end-of-life care\, and organ donation. Bassie is also the founder of Wellness Motivations LLC\, where she provides personalized health coaching to help clients lead healthier\, more balanced lives. Rachel  will break it up into simple steps and everyone will come away with a “masterpiece” \nRachel Gabarsky has always had a passion for art since she was very young. She went to Stern College with a joint program with FIT  majored in art and minored in psychology.  She went on to get a graduate degree in art education from Queens College. She has taught children and adults of various ages in schools\, camps\, nursing homes\, and private homes. She currently works with the special needs population with organizations such as Hamaspik. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 11\, 2025\, 12 noon EST \n“On My Own…But Not Alone”\nAhava Ehrenpreis\, nee Sperka\, a Detroit native who now calls New York home\, was married to world-renowned mathematician\, Dr. Leon Ehrenpreis z”l\, and is a mother and grandmother. She taught English and Judaic studies at the college level for many years but now is a full-time freelance writer. She has gained an active following for her many first-person essays and articles that appear regularly in various Jewish publications\, indeed\, the responses to her articles on facing life’s challenges prompted her to write this book. As a parent of a child with special needs and actively writing on that topic for many venues\, she wrote “More Than Special\, Perspectives from the World of Special Needs\, (Artscroll/Shaar Press)\, 2020. DESCRIPTION:Since 2005 OU Relief Missions has been sending groups to New Orleans to assist with immediate disaster relief and long-term recovery work. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 18\, 2025\, 12 noon EST \nDealing with the Darkness of Dementia: Awareness and Conversation\nWally Klatch’s professional career was as a Management Consultant for large manufacturing companies. Now 70 years old\, Wally was diagnosed with Early-Stage Dementia two years ago. Wally is active in raising public awareness and conversation about dementia including Alzheimer’s\, Lewy Body\, and other forms of dementia. He writes a weekly post that shows how dementia appears in each week’s Torah portion. \nIn this discussion\, he will be joined by Rabbi Dr. Jason Weiner\, who serves as the senior rabbi and executive director of the Spiritual Care Department at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles\, where he is responsible for the chaplaincy team and all aspects of spiritual care throughout the health system. He is also the rabbi of Knesset Israel Synagogue of Beverlywood. \nRabbi Weiner previously served as the assistant rabbi at Young Israel of Century City. He has earned two rabbinic ordinations\, as well as a Doctorate in clinical bioethics from Loyola University (Chicago)\, where he also earned a master’s degree in bioethics and health policy\, in addition to a master’s degree in Jewish history from Yeshiva University. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 20\, 2025  12 noon EDT. \nLiving Well (Enough) with Chronic Pain \n\nWhat does it mean to live Well (Enough) with Chronic Pain?\nWhat supports are helpful to people living with Chronic Pain?\nWhat is not helpful?\nWho needs a support group anyway?\n\nPRESENTED BY: Michele Cohen\, LCSW\, FIPA\, Anne Brazer Ciemnecki\, MA and Janet (Jan) Stubbs \nMichele Cohen\, LCSW\, FIPA\, is a psychotherapist/psychoanalyst in private practice\, based in New York City\, with an interest in group work as well as individual adult treatment. She is a graduate of the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society (CFS) in New York City and a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytic Association. Michele is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Contemporary Freudian Society. She has taught in both CFS’s Psychoanalytic Training Institute and its 2-year Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program. She has also supervised and taught at the Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (MITPP). Michele also has an ongoing interest in understanding the mind–body duality as it interfaces with patients suffering from physical pain conditions\, an area of practice that is often misunderstood by physicians as well as by mental health professionals. She has presented her work in this area at NEFESH International (2018) and at the FPA’s National Conference (2019). She currently facilitates online support groups for individuals with neuropathic facial pain. \nAnne Brazer Ciemnecki\, MA\, is a retired senior fellow from Mathematica\, where she specialized in health and economic policy. Her mother and grandmother had trigeminal neuralgia. Anne has seen treatment evolve from the ineffective alcohol injections her grandmother used to the high-tech magnetic resonance imaging\, microvascular decompression (MVD)\, and gamma knife ablation that alleviated her pain. She serves on the New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service and the Womanspace Advisory Counsel. She is a member of the Mercer County Medical Reserve Corps\, an advocate for domestic violence victims\, and a therapy dog handler. Anne is Secretary of the FPA Board of Directors and has been a peer mentor and support group leader for the FPA. She has been instrumental in designing the FPA Patient Registry. Anne is the coeditor of two books\, Facial Pain: A 21st Century Guide (Lulu\, 2020) and Facial Pain: Living Well with Neuropathic Facial Pain. \nJanet (Jan) Stubbs started having health issues when she developed rheumatoid arthritis at 20 years of age. She developed peripheral neuropathy and TN 18 years ago. She also had a below-knee amputation of her left leg 15 years ago because of a methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. She has been a life-long volunteer with her church. Now in her 80s\, she continues to volunteer at church and in clubs in her retirement village. An important volunteer activity is driving people to their health appointments. Her TN was under control with Neurontin for several years until the drug depleted her sodium to dangerously low levels. Through a member of her son’s church\, she found a brain surgeon who performed a successful MVD in 2018\, and she has been pain-free from TN since then. Understanding the Role of Tefila in Illness \n\nMisconceptions about tefila\nCan we pray for miracles when the doctors say there is no cure?\nHidden miracles versus open miracles in times of illness\n\nPresented by Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Brody \nRabbi Dr. Shlomo Brody is the executive director of Ematai\, an organization dedicated to helping people navigate dilemmas regarding end-of-life care\, and a columnist for the Jerusalem Post. His writings and work are dedicated to applying Jewish ethics to modern dilemmas. DESCRIPTION:Occupational Therapy and Aging in Place \nAlthough most older adults express a preference to age in place\, many admit they have not prepared to be able to stay in their homes as they face age-related changes. Occupational therapists can be integral partners in this process.  Occupational Therapists are well-suited to facilitate safe\, meaningful\, and sustainable aging in place.  They use specialized frameworks to capture critical components of successful aging and create actionable plans that ensure the environment\, the person\, and their occupations work well together to allow for aging in place \nUnderstanding how Occupational Therapists see the process of aging in place\, including environment modifications and community resources\, can be helpful in this journey. \npresented by Sophie Buchbinder\, OTD\, OTR/L  \nSophie Buchbinder\, OTD\, OTR/L \, is originally from Colombia\, South America and moved to the US to attend Stern College. After graduating Stern College\, she pursued a degree in Occupational Therapy at Columbia University (2013) and later a Post-Professional Doctorate from Boston University (2024)\, where her doctoral work focused on aging in place. With over a decade of experience\, she’s worked in hospital\, rehab\, and home care settings in NYC\, as well as home care and mobile outpatient roles in New Jersey\, where she now lives with her family.  Outside of clinical practice\, Sophie teaches foundational courses at a local OT program.
