SUMMARY:How to Communicate with People who Have a Hearing Loss – Without Feeling Awkward
DESCRIPTION:The program will feature:  \n\n10 tips for helping to understand and make yourself understood to someone with a hearing loss\nResources for people with hearing loss  (captioning\, CART services\, voice to text apps)\n\nPresented by: Yael Zelinger\, Disability and Inclusion Associate\, Coordinator of JADE: Jewish Advocates for Deaf Education\, Education Associate\, and Martha Goodman. \nAbout Yael:\nYael earned her  Master of Arts in Deaf Education/Special Education from McDaniel College. She has worked at the Macks Center for Jewish Education in Baltimore since 1999\, advocating for people with special needs and specifically people with hearing loss. She proudly manages the CJE’s Access Grant that helps pay for interpreters and captions for Jewish community events and videos. She also runs regular ASL Meet Ups for people who sign\, to get together and shmooze around a Jewish theme\, teaches American Sign Language in Bais Yakov HS\, and advocates and educates the Jewish community on how to accommodate people with hearing loss through workshops like this. \nAbout Martha:  \nMartha has been with Baltimore’s Center for Jewish Education since 2005\, working with over 150 families each year\, as they navigate the special education system. In addition\, she helped to build the Baltimore Jewish Abilities Alliance database\, and can connect patrons to hundreds of resources\, as needed. She has developed expertise in captioning\, making CJE programming more accessible. As we get older\, our risk of certain eye conditions increases. Come learn about the definition\, diagnosis\, symptoms\, and treatment for age-related macular degeneration\, cataracts\, and glaucoma from Dr. Siri Shetty\, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College practicing in NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Eye Center in Fresh Meadows . This program is in partnership with the NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Community Health Initiatives (CHI).
