Elkins Park, PA United States – OU Communities

About this community

Elkins Park is an uncommonly beautiful suburban enclave only 20 minutes by train from Center City, Philadelphia. Elkins Park’s thriving Orthodox community centers around Young Israel of Elkins Park, with many young families, daily minyanim and shiurim, and many programs for congregants of all ages.

Living costs are far below Metro NY as well as below other suburban Orthodox communities. Apartments (2-3 bedrooms) rent for $1300-$1500/month. Condominiums begin below $100K and starter semi-detached (twin) homes begin below $200K. Typical 4-bedroom homes are $275K-$350K. Even the area’s large historic mansions are rarely over $700K. Income taxes are lower than Metro NY; property taxes are $5K for a starter home and $9-$11K for a $300K home.

Philadelphia is known for medicine and education, with five medical schools, universities such as the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Drexel University, and many smaller institutions. Philadelphia is also a center for the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

As America’s 5th-largest city, Philadelphia boasts major-league sports, performing arts groups including a “top-five” orchestra, a nationally-regarded art museum, many smaller museums, and an extensive park system.

Within Elkins Park, education choices include the Gutman Early Learning Center and Mesivta Yesodei Yisroel. Many other schools are in nearby Northeast Philadelphia and Bala Cynwyd. Transportation is free by law, and Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and scholarship funding is readily available. Kosher shopping and restaurants are close by.
