First Rabbi for Central American Jews Whose Ancestors Fled Inquisition

Long-lost Jewish communities in three Central American countries – El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala – will soon have their very first full-time rabbi. The Bnei Anousim, descendants of Jews forced to convert to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition, will be led in by Rabbi Elisha Salas. Rabbi Salas comes to them courtesy of Shavei Israel, an organization that connects with, and educates, Jews in far-flung communities.

Rabbi Salas is a native of Chile. He will be based in San Salvador, which is the capital of El Salvador and which is home to a population of 300 Bnei Anousim, all of whom practice Orthodox Judaism.
