ADL: 4.2 Million Anti-Semitic Tweets in 2017

The Anti-Defamation League has estimated that, out of trillions of tweets posted on Twitter between Jan. 29, 2017, and Jan. 28, 2018, 4.2 million were anti-Semitic. The tweets were made by approximately three million different accounts. The number of anti-Semitic tweets ranged from 36,800 in the week of July 23-29 to 181,700 in the week of Dec. 3-9. There was no apparent cause for the discrepancy.

A program search for anti-Semitic stereotypes and pejoratives, Holocaust denial, and praise for anti-Semitic figures; it did not focus on criticism of Israel except when it was based on anti-Semitic stereotypes or conspiracy theories. Experts examined 55,000 of 19 million tweets that came under review to statistically control for users who were using such language sarcastically, ironically or to condemn anti-Semitism.
