For the past fifteen years, Rabbi Yaakov Lehrfield has been the rabbi of the Young Israel of Staten Island, committed to serving the spiritual needs and the wellbeing of the community. Rabbi Lehrfield is one of five sons of Rabbi David and Rebbetzin Miriam Lehrfield, who commencing at a young age, officiated at the Young Israel of Miami Beach, and for the past 32 years have served with great distinction as Rav and Rebbetzin of the Young Israel of Greater Miami.
Rabbi Yaakov Lehrfield was educated at the University of Miami, beginning at age 15, ultimately earning a Master’s degree in Education and Jewish Letters from the Itri School in Jerusalem. At the age of 17 he began rigorous religious training in Israel, at Yeshivat Yad Aharon under the tutelage of Rav Betzalel Zolty zt”l, then Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, and continuing at the Mirrer Yeshiva. He received rabbinical ordination from Rav Zolty in 1984 and from Rav Reuven Feinstein, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva of Staten Island, in 2001. Rabbi Lehrfield’s career of transmitting Torah began at the age of 25 as a Rosh Yeshiva in Yeshivas Beis Yisroel, in Jerusalem. Upon his return to the US, the Rabbi continued his teaching career as Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva Ateres Yaakov while simultaneously serving as assistant rabbi at the Young Israel of Woodmere.
