WHAT CAN I SAY TO HER MOTHER? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What can a person possibly say to the mother of Yael, the effervescent ninth grader who was murdered in last week's Ben Yehuda bombing in downtown Jerusalem? As many of my friends and acquaintances already know, I was supposed to be eating my lunch at the Village Green restaurant on Ben Yehuda street when the suicide bombers transformed a delightful pedestrian mall into an apocalyptic bloodbath. Call it chance, call it divine intervention, call it whatever you will, but a last minute gut feeling and subsequent change of scheduling saved my life. However, once I heard about the attack I returned to the site and I saw with my own eyes the devastation and destruction with my own eyes. Words cannot describe what I saw. The scene before me was something beyond belief, the fright and shock that I saw on people's faces I will never forget, and the stench of burnt human flesh remains with me in the forefront of my mind one week later. I learned later on that Yael Botwin had been standing at the bazaar a few meters from where I was supposed to be eating my lunch on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Why did she die? Why did I have the "luck" to survive and live longer? I do not know and I do not think that anyone can answer these questions. For some reason, I have kept thinking about Yael over the last few days. Her name kept jumping out to me from the newspapers more than any other name. I do not know why. However, I kept thinking that maybe I should visit her family. In the past when there has been a terrorist attack I would follow the news religiously absorbing every  minute detail but I would maintain a distance from getting too personally involved in the story. This time I seem propelled to experience the pain of the event to the fullest. Perhaps it is because of what I saw in person that I realized that I can not avoid the reality any more.   I suppose a part of my naivity died on Thursday and my soul was deeply affected forcing me to follow it through to the end. Well, I never go near Yael's neighborhood. It is simply out of my periphery of daily activities. Yesterday afternoon, after much hesitation, I finally decided to take a new course that began last night. I went to the place of study, and found myself across the street from Yael Botwin's house. I learned last week to trust my gut. Last night I learned that sometimes when I do not act to follow my gut then GD sets the stage.  Here I was standing in front of the Botwin home where signs announcing the death of Yael were plastered across the stone wall, a backdrop to a group of young teens talking and crying quietly. I went inside. You could tell from the way the home was set up that Yael came from a warm and secure home.  Since we cannot keep our children caged into our homes and at some point they must step out into the world, we give up some of that security.  But to remain caged animals is no existence either. The people in Yael's home sat stone faced. I could tell that no one really knew what words to say to comfort to Yael's mother and siblings. Yael's mother looked drained, exhausted, shocked and bewildered. She sat on a low seat quietly the pain etched into her face, a look of disillusionment in her eyes. As I sat down I recalled how my paternal grandmother sobbed uncontrolably when my father died of cancer a few months ago. My father was 71 and my grandmother is in her 90's. "This is what I lived so long for " my grandmother moaned, "to see my Jackie die". If my grandmother could feel such loss when losing her 71 year old son to a disease, then how much more is the pain and suffering that Yael's mother must be enduring having her child snatched from her in such a cruel and inhumane manner? The silence in the room was deafening. Yael's mother turned to a friend in an effort to ease the uncomfortable silence. "How are your children doing" she asked innocently. Here she was sitting shiva mourning her own daughter and in her own natural selfless way she was asking about the welfare of her friend's children. I felt the pit in my stomach deepen. Words that are casually used on a regular basis suddenly weighed heavily when mentioned in the house of mourning. I cannot recall whether it was Yael's mother or a friend who made a reference to a certain place as a "Garden Of Eden". However, as we sat remembering Yael the words suddenly took on a deeper more profound meaning. I approached Yael's mother when the afternoon prayers began. "My name is Yechezkel. I did not know Yael. However, I was there on Thursday and by some miracle I am here today to talk about it. I was supposed to be eating lunch right near the spot where Yael was killed". Here I had come to comfort a mother and she in turn said to me "Oh, it must be terrible for you. How can you sleep at night". I continued. "Somehow I felt drawn to Yael's name. I thought of coming here but it was not until I ended up here a few minutes ago for a course across the street to take a cours. When I arrived  I saw the signs outside. I had thought of coming all week and in the end GD led me here in the most peculiar way. After all, I have been thinking of taking this course for over a month and it was just this afternoon that I decided to take it. I guess it was meant to be. I just wanted to say that I am very sorry about Yael, I am so sorry". I returned later for the evening service and being a mourner myself, I ended up leading the prayers. I glanced over and saw Yael's mother swaying and praying wondering from where her strength and belief was coming from. I left the house and returned to my course. Then it hit me. As I sat down in class with my fellow students, all new immigrants from Russia, Europe, France, USA, Canada, England and elsewhere, I realized what I can say to Yael's mother. I say it here. You brought your family here to live in Israel in hope of a better life and a future for your children. Then this senseless tragedy occured. Why? No one has the answer to that question. Yet, I can respond to Yael's death. You are not alone, we are all with you, we all came to build a future in Israel leaving our extended families, friends and familiar surroundings behind us. All this for an ideal of a jewish people living in the Promised Land.  At the same time we all realize that any one of us could have died on Ben Yehuda last Thursday.  For some reason, Yael died and not me. When I asked you about her you told me that she was a creative soul who was in love with nature.  You told me of the beautiful Sunflowers she planted. We are with you in your sorrow.  We are staying in Israel, we are not going anywhere. Yael planted the seeds. She was cut down just when she was starting to bloom as an invidual.  The fruits of her labor will continue after her. The seeds she planted will blossom. In our daily lives we will remember her youth, her vigour, her promise and her tragic end. These thoughts will remain with us and she will not be forgotten.  We will deepen our commitment to the ideals you had in mind when you brought your family to Israel from America. As we say in Israel, "We are with you in your sorrow".  It is ironic, I finally figured out what to Yael's mother. And yet, it still does not seem to be enough. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @@@@ Yechezkel Goldberg Jerusalem Diary email chezig@ganharmony.org

The PEACE PROCESS is really a WAR PROCESS. We should stop pretending. These deaths are deaths in a war where the Palestinians talk peace and commit killings. Both Peres and Netanyahu have shown that regardless of the approach, the Palestinians see the PEACE PROCESS as a chance to kill Israelis.

It is truly tragic that we must continue to suffer this terrorism. When will we wake up to our destiny and return to the proper path? My heart goes out to all the families of the victims and to the survivors. May the entire Jewish nation experience a waking up and return to the true Torah path. this will bring us Moshiach and an end to this kind of tragedy. Until then, perhaps we need to follow the guidelines of Rav Meir Kahane, OB"M, and kick all the Arabs out of Israel.

I am very saddened by the news that agin our beloved Jews must shed their blood for the sins of the world. Must Israel go to war to protect our Jewish people? How is it possible to say, I love G-d and hate the Jewish people--no you cannot say in your heart that I love G-d and have hate toward our beloved Jews. I am not Jewish, but consider myself a B'Nai No'ach. My heart is very heavy for my beloved Jewish people today.

We salute the brave jews answering the call of Hashem to re-settle their inheritance. We grieve at the loss of life and loved ones in this persuit. May the families of the fallen receive an extra measure of grace and mercy from Hashem Himself. May their example of selfless devotion to the divine process of Zionism be an example for us all. May we be found with our hands to the plow, busy and envolved. As Christian Zionists we support the regathering of the exiled remnant of Jacob, not only in mere words, but in action. Our hearts and prayers are forever with G-d's chosen people who are faithful to His calling to return home and in doing so, usher in redemption. Am Yisrael Chai!!!

"Peace talks" are a ruse of the Moslem world, and I pray Israelis will not be deceived any longer. My prayer is that PM Netanyahu would hear from HaShem as Joshua did in days of old, and that he and members of the govt. would turn to G-d for guidance. We all fell very saddened at the death of an innocent civilian caused by terrorism for any reason whatsoever. Until the Palestinian Authority truly cracks down on Hamas and Hazbullah and other radical groups there can never be peace in Israel no matter how much territory is given away and which should be not given away. It is a very sad thing, that a tragedy like this one, has again befallen Am Yisrael. Why should people who are shopping in a market, be added to the list of the victims of terror ??? There is something to be learnt from everything that happens, even a horrible event like this one. We are in the Three Weeks now, & almost the 9 days. This is a time that terrible things have happened to the Jewish people, sadly, this terrorist attack, can be added on to the list of bad things. Let us try to improve our deeds, and daven for the people who are injured, & Baruch Dayan Emes to the people who were so innocently murdered. We should look at the tragedy & try to improve ourselves, and in that merit, we should hear of happy things & good news ONLY from now on, And may we merit to see the Geulah Shelayma, the final redemption, & the coming of Mashiach, & the building of the Beis HaMikdash, B'Mehayra, VERY QUICKLY, B'Yameynu, in our days !! L'shana HaBa'ah B'Yerushalayim Habenuya !!!!!!

My heartfelt condolences go out to all the friends an relatives of the bombing victims. The pictures of yesterday's cruel bombing attack, brought tears to my eyes as well as many other whether it be Jew or non-Jew. I have relatives in Israel and it makes me very upset a cowardly act like this happens. There has to accountablity for this action, and the accountability lies with Yasser Arafat. Mr. Arafat is today's Amalek and making peace with him will get us nowhere. The killing must stop. This is not peace.

Is there anything to say to help all theses families? Do words mean something when the pain is so terrible? Let's pray, altogether for their souls! I believe that if The ALMIGHTY called them to HIM, they must be very special and chosen!!! So lets believe that only the BEST of our People are called soon in their lives to join HEAVEN!!! They are certainly doing their best to lead all the children of Israel to Redemption and Peace and the coming of Mashiah!!! With a lot of Faith, Daniella

SOMEONE ONCE POINTED OUT TO ME THAT JUST ABOUT EVERY ONE OF THE RECENT SUICIDE ATTACKS ON ISRAEL OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS OCCURED AT TIMES OF THE DAY IN WHICH YESHIVOT IN ERETZ YISROEL WERE NOT IN SESSION. INDEED THE YESHIVOT WERE NOT IN SESSION DURING THE EARLY RUSH HOUR ATTACKS, AND IT IS QUITE A WELL KNOWN FACT THAT ISRAEL SHUTS DOWN FROM BETWEEN THE HOURS OF ONE IN THE AFTERNOON, UNTILL FOUR IN THE AFTERNOON. THE FACT THAT SUCH A TRAGIC OCCURENCE HAS ONCE AGAIN BEFALLEN ISRAEL, AND AT PRECISELY A QUARTER PAST ONE IN THE AFTERNOON, IS NO COINCIDENCE. G-D CREATED THE WORLD ALLOWING THAT THE SUN SHINE ITS RAYS SOMEWHERE ON THIS EARTH AT EVERY MOMENT OF THE DAY. G-D IN HIS INFINITE WISDOM ALSO SCATTERED HIS DEAR CHILDREN ABOUT THE EARTH, ALLOWING FOR HIS HOLY TORAH TO CONSTANTLY BE LEARNT THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DAY. THEREFORE, WHEN ERETZ YISROEL SETTLES DOWN TO REST, IT IS EVERYONE ELSES DUTY TO MAKE UP FOR THAT TEMPORARY LOSS. MAY HASHEM GIVE US THE STRENGTH TO IMMERSE OURSELVES IN HIS TORAH, AND IN THE MERIT OF OUR LEARNING, AND FOR THE SAKE OF THOSE WHOM WILL NEVER AGAIN BE ABLE TO ACQUIRE THE FRUITS OF THIS WORLD, MAY WE MERIT TO SEE AND EXPERIENCE THE ULTIMATE REDEMPTION SPEEDILY IN OUR DAYS. "AL SHLOSHA DEVARIM HA'OLAM OMED - AL HATORAH, V'AL HA'AVODAH, V'AL GEMILUT CHASADIM".

The entire community of Israel is saddened by the horrifying terrorist incident which took place in Jerusalem. I cannot express my feelings properly to offer any condolences. May we be comforted along with the mourners and Zion and Jerusalem.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all fell very saddened at the death of an innocent civilian caused by terrorism for any reason whatsoever. Until the Palestinian Authority truly cracks down on Hamas and Hazbullah and other radical groups there can never be peace in Israel no matter how much territory is given away and which should be not given away. I suggest ending the so-called peace process immediately.

May Hashem heal the souls of those who have lost a loved one. May Hashem heal the bodies of those injured. May all find strength to continue with life, and thus deny the minutest share of triumph to the evil doers.
