[December 7] Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 1941, a day that shall live in imfamy... ••• The "Road of Valor", connecting besieged Jerusalem to the rest of the Yishuv was opened, 1948. 

[11 Kislev] Avraham of Augsburg, a Ger, was martyred, 1265. ••• 7000 Jews of Minsk were murdered by the Nazis, 1942. ••• Yeshiva College became Yeshiva Univeristy, the first American university under Jewish auspices.

[December 8] Luis de Carabajal, first Jewish author in America, and his mother were burned at the stake in Mexico City, 1596. ••• Shalom Jacob Abramovitsch (better known as Mendele Mocher Seforim, the other street that the Center is on) died, 1917.

[12 Kislev] Yahrzeit of the MAHARSHAL, Rabbi Shlomo Luria, author of Yam shel Shlomo, 1573.

[December 9] "Illegal" Jewish immigrants who had reached Haifa aboard the Atlantic were deported by the British to the island of Mauritius, 1940. ••• The first Japanese ambassador to Israel presented his credentials (as they say), 1957. ••• U.N. General Assembly called for the internationalization of Jerusalem - 1949. The Partitition Resolution (see 17 Kislev) also did. And the world has been trying ever since. ••• The British captured Jerusalem from the Turks, 1917. ••• Czar Alexander I of Russia ordered a charter of new liberties for Jews. It was supposedly motivated by "solicitude for the true welfare of the Jews", but in reality, it lead to economic ruin for half of Russian Jewry. ••• Prussia decreed that "the divine service of the Je3ws must be conducted in accordance with traditional ritual and without the slightest innovation in language, ceremonies, prayers, and songs". This decree of 1823 was issued at the behest of the Orthodox community as a way to fight the fledgling Reform movement in Germany. Unfortunately, government intervention in Jewish communal affairs has a way of usually working against our best interests.

[13 Kislev] Yahrzeit of Ravina, co-editor of Talmud Bavli, 499. His death marked the end of the talmudic era. ••• Mass murder of the Jews of Mogilev - city in east-central Belarus (that's White Russia, whose capital is Minsk, 1761. ••• Hillel Zlatopolsky, founder of Keren HaYesod (as in 22 Keren HaYesod) was murdered in Paris, 1932.

[December 10] Yitzchak Ben Zvi was elected as Israel's second president, 1952. ••• Shmuel Yosef Agnon (of 50 shekel bill fame) received Nobel prize for literature, 1966. First international recognition of a Hebrew writer.
[14 Kislev] Birthdate of Reuven, b'chor of Yaakov Avinu. ••• First plane of Operation Magic Carpet, which brought thousands of Yemenite Jews to Israel, left Aden, 1948. 

[December 11] First printed edition of Mikra'ot Gedolot was published in Venice in 1517. 

[15 Kislev] Rabbi Natan ben Yechiel of Rome completed his classic talmudic dictionary, Ha'Aruch, 1105. ••• Pulver Purim, established by the Chayei Adam (Rabbi Avraham Danzig) to mark a miraculous escape, 1804.

[December 12] Jews of Nassau, Germany were granted equality, 1848. ••• Anti-Jewish riots in Bucharest, 1897. ••• Jews of Schlettstadt, Alsace were expelled, 1479. ••• Rosh Pina, first Jewish settlement in the Galil, was established, 1882. 

[16 Kislev] Hermann Ahlwardt, "father" of German anti-Semitism, was elected to the Reichstag, 1892. ••• The Nazis formed the Judenrat, a Jewish communal organization whose primary function was the implementation of Nazi orders, 1939.

[December 13] The Knesset voted to transfer Israel's seat of government to Jerusalem, 1949.Secular date of the death of the Rambam, 1204.

[17 Kislev] Massacre of the Jews of Augsburg, Germany, 1349. ••• Many Jews killed in riots in Paris, 1380. ••• This is the Hebrew date of KAF-TET b'NOVEMBER, 1947 (Saturday night, that is - if the U.N. vote was during the day, thaen the Hebrew date is 16 Kislev). U.N. resolution 181 was passed, clearing the way for the establishment of the State of Israel. 33 countries voted for the "partition of Palestine", 13 against, 10 abstentions. 
FYI: There were only 57 countries in the U.N. at the time (today there are 189 members). [December 14] Gedeira was founded, 1884. ••• 13 Hagana members, escorting a convoy to Ben Shemen, were ambushed and killed, 1947. ••• A national referendum in Spain, 1966, approved a new constitution which granted freedom of religion to Jews and Protestants.
