Word of the Month

WORD OF THE MONTH

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

ROSH CHODESH TEVET WILL BE B'YOM R'VI'I (WEDNESDAY)
The Molad will be on Tuesday, December 26th, 3h 29m 7p
In Rambam notation: Shlishi, 9hours, 529 chalakim
On the clock: TUE Dec.26, 3:08½am Israel Standard time (This time can be adjusted to your time zone, although the announcement in Shul for Rosh Chodesh benching stays the same all over the world.)

The actual (astronomical) Molad will be on MON Dec.25, 7:23pm (This time is practically irrelevant for our fixed calendar, but is essential for the past and future Sanhedrin. The Molad occurring on Monday evening means that first visibility of the new moon would be Tuesday night, and if witnesses were to testify to that and the Sanhedrin were to accept their testimony, then Wednesday would be proclaimed as Rosh Chodesh - which matches our fixed calendar this time, but not always.)
