[4 Cheshvan] Rambam reached Jerusalem, 1165, six months after his arrival in Eretz Yisrael. He and his family celebrated the date as a pivate holiday. «» Torquemada was appointed Inquisitor-General of Spain, 1483. «» Purim Edom by the Algerian Jewish Community celebrating their escape from capture by the Spanish army, 1541. «» Yahrzeit of Rabbi Yehuda HaChasid, leader of a large Ashkenazi aliya, 1700 — 3 days after his arrival. (The "Hurva" was originally the shul named for him.) «» Austria's Jews were forbidden to have the first names of Christian saints, 1834. «» Rumanian soldiers massacred 26,000 Jews of Odessa, 1941.
[November 2] The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot was dedicated, 1949. «» Riga ghetto was destroyed by the Nazis, 1943. «» Chmielnicki's forces massacred 12,000 Jews of Narol, Podolia, 1648. «» The Balfour Declaration, calling for the establishment for a Jewish homeland in Palestine was issued, 1917.

[5 Cheshvan] Jews of Landau, Germany were ordered to wear a yellow badge, 1468. «» Yahrzeit of Rabbi Avraham Rice, 1845, one of the Orthodox leaders of the Baltimore Jewish community and founder of one of the first Hebrew schools in the U.S., 1869. «» Yahrzeit of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer, 1874. «» Hebrew became one of the official languages of the courts in E. Yisrael under the British Mandate, 1920.
[November 3] Msgr. Bernard Lichtenberg of Berlin, outspoken critic of Nazi treatment of the Jews, died en route to Dachau, 1943. «» jews of Paris and the entire royal domain of France were expelled the Charles VI, 1394.

[6 Cheshvan] Jews of Sicily were forbidden to decorate the exterior of shuls, 1366. (King Frederick III probably thought of himself as being kind to the Jews for allowing them to have a shul in the first place.)
[November 4] 100 Jews of Florence, Italy were rounded up and deported to "killing" camps, 1943. «» Jews of Warsaw were notified of the establishment of a ghetto, 1939.

[7 Cheshvan] First Jews arrived at the sight of Petach Tikvah to prepare the ground for a new settlement, 1878. «» Yahrzeit of Rabbi Meir Shapira, organizer of Daf Yomi, 1933. «» 10,000 Jews were removed from the Kovno ghetto by the Nazis for execution on the following day, 1941. «» Jewish children under 12 years of age were removed from the ghetto of Shavl (Lithuania) and executed, 1943.
[November 5] Jacob Barsimon and Asher Levy of New Amsterdam (later New York) petitioned for the right to stand guard and be relieved of the special tax imposed on the Jews because they didn't do guard duty - which were not allowed to do. (This was not an uncommon "game" played by many of our Diaspora "hosts". Forbid the Jews from some aspect of communal life and then exact from them an exorbitant tax for their non-participation in society. Or — how about this one? —require their wearing a yellow badge or a special humiliating hat and then charge them a large amount of money for being exempt from wearing it.) «» Congregation Bracha V'Shalom of Surinam was dedicated, 1685. It was one of the oldest congregations in America.

[8 Cheshvan] Yahrzeit of Rabbeinu Yona Gerondi, 1263. «» The Rabbi Yehuda HaChasid shul was set afire, 1720. (the shul was repaired and used until 1947 when the Jordanians destroyed it again. Today we know its sight and remains as the Hurva.) «» 10,000 Jewish lives were lost to Nazi mass executions of Kovno's Jewish community, 1941.
[November 6] Abe Beame became the first Jewish Mayor of New York City, 1973. «» 500 Jews of Kolomyya, Galicia and 15,000 Jews of Rowno, Poland were massacred by the Nazis, 1941. «» Chana Senesh (Szenes) was executed in Budapest, by the Nazis, 1944. «» 12,000 Jews of Minsk were executed by the Nazis, 1942.

[9 Cheshvan] Rambam left Jerusalem for Hebron and Egypt, 1165. «» Yahrzeit of the Ro"Sh )Rabbeinu Asher), Toledo, Spain, 1327. «» King Casimir III of Poland granted Jews many important privileges, 1334. «» An earthquale killed several hundred Jews of Tzfat, 1759. «» Yahrzeit of Rabbi Shimon Shkop, 1939.
[November 7] Solomon Molcho, Marrano kabbalist and mystic, was burned at the stake, 1532.

[10 Cheshvan] Birthday of Gad, son of Yaakov. «» Jews of England were imprisoned, 1278; many suffered martyrdom.
[November 8] First census by the Israeli government listed 712,000 Jews and 68,000 Arabs, 1948. «» Magic Carpet aliya of Yemenite Jews began on this day in 1949. «» Deportation of the Jews of Budapest began, 1944. «» By a treaty ratified in 1855, between the United States and Switzerland, it was agreed that the U.S. would not protest the Swiss discrimination against American Jewish businessmen.

[11 Cheshvan] The 4105th Yahrzeit of Metushelach. «» Birthday of Binyamin, son of Yaakov and Rachel. «» Yahrzeit of Rachel Imeinu (the only Biblical woman whose yahrzeit has been commemorated throughout the generations. «» 180 Jews were killed in Munich, Germany, 1285.
[November 9] A huge Nazi pogrom, which later became known as Kristellnacht took place throughout Germany and Austria, 1938. «» General Ulysses S. Grant issued the first in a series of orders barriing Jews from serving under his command, 1862.
