PARSHA-PIX - Parshat Noach
Here's an all-new Parshat No'ach ParshaPix. Top. Couldn't resist. See if your children, spouse, guests get it. Do you get it yet? It is how the animals came to No'ach and the Teiva — in PEARS (pairs). Old joke, but it was fun representing it. Then, below the pears, are three symbols of the Mabul and its aftermath. Ask a child to put them in chronological order. The cloud with rain goes first. That produced the Mabul. The dove with the olive branch was No'ach's test that the waters had receded. And the rainbow was shown to No'ach after he left the ark. The fish represents the fish that survived under the Teiva. They did not have to be taken into the Teiva, but merited survival (although all the rest of the water, except what was under the ark, was destructive of life) because of their proper adherence to the laws of nature. Beneath the dove is a cluster of grapes, representing No'ach's entry into the world of farming. The flask of wine represents No'ach's indulgence and the subsequent story of disgraceful behavior of Cham and the respectful behavior towards their father, of Sheim and Yefet. Middle-bottom is for the proliferation of the generations as described in the sedra. Which brings us to the Tower of Babel in the lower-right, next to which is the representation of the mixing up of the languages that was
G-d's punishment for the behavior of the people "of a singl;e nation with a single language". What you see are the numbers one through ten in ten different languages. Spelling is often phonetic rather than the way the word is usually spelled. Try to guess before checking with this list. The languages in order are:
Jananese, Dutch, French, Swedish, Welsh, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Greek, and - ready for this one? - Swahili. Last week's (B'reishit) offerings... [1] Major, minor, Baruch HaShem [The Noach Homepage]
