WORD OF THE MONTH A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem... Last Motza'ei Shabbat was a perfect evening for Kiddush L'vana. Probably, most KL-saying people said KL then. Some said KL on the previous Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday but most said in on Motza"Sh. It was the first op for 7-day people and for Motza"Sh people too. Alas, there probably are some people who missed it. It's really a beautiful, meaingful, and important bracha to say you shouldn't miss it. (Some say that women also must say K.L.; some say they can, if they so choose; some say that they should not say it.) Last chance for KL in any month is 14d 18h 22m (that's half the time from one Molad to the next, a period of time called a lunation) after the announced Molad. For this month, last chance is SHA 2h 1m 5p PLUS 14:18:22 which brings us to SHA 20h 23m 5p, which translates to 8:01pm this Motza"Sh, November 11th. Note that in NY, for example, the last chance is 1:01pm Shabbat afternoon. No moon and not night. Therefore, last KL w/b Friday night. [The Lech Lecha Homepage]
