Word of the Month

Parashat Vayeitzei

A weekly feature of Torah Tidbits to help clarify practical and conceptual aspects of the Jewish Calendar, thereby better fulfilling the mitzva of HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem...

By now, everyone should have said Kiddush L'vana already this month, regardless of which custom one follows.

Yet, for those who have not yet said it, there still are a few more opportunities. Thursday night, the eve of the 10th of Kislev is good. One should not purposely wait until Motza'ei Shabbat this late into the time-frame for K.L. But Motza'ei Shabbat is still in time, as are Sunday and Monday nights. The deadline this monthis Tuesday night at 11:13pm. If one has not said K.L. by that time, it is too late to say it (according to most authorities).

Most calendar dates can fall on any of four days of the week and cannot fall on the other three. This is in line with the famous LO AD"U ROSH, and applies with variations to 265 of the days of a year. The sometimes-yes-sometimes-no status of 30 Cheshvan, 30 Kislev, and the 30 days of Adar Rishon affect the other dates. Oneof the results is that the days of Kislev can fall on any of SIX days of the week. This is unique to Kislev. By the time Tevet rolls around, we have 5 days possible, and in the Adar before Nissan, we are back to 4.
